1, record 1, French, - %C3%A9purateur%20en%20boucle%20ouverte

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface : the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett's work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination. 1, record 13, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

Well test flaring occurs during drilling and testing of all oil and gas wells. This is a standard practice used to determine the types of fluids the well can produce, the pressure and flow rates of fluids and other characteristics of the underground reservoir. If there are pipelines nearby, operators may be able to direct the test gas to a processing plant and this process is called "in-line testing. "This is not a practice that is feasible for some exploratory wells as there may not be any pipelines and processing plants nearby. The pressure, flow and composition of the gas has to be determined before it can be safely handled by the pipelines and processing plants. This information determines the economic value of the well and what type of production facilities will be installed. … Some well test flaring may be necessary after certain well servicing operations. An instrument which responds to density changes in the gas stream, directly related to the molecular weights. Several forms of gas density balance have been developed since this type of detector was first introduced by Martin and James. Improvements in instrumentation have led to a revival of interest in it as a detector system suitable for molecular-weight studies. The density changes are measured by means of a form of U-tube, one limb of which contains pure carrier gas and the other column effluent gas. An anemometer situated between the two limbs detects and measures any density difference. Using nitrogen or argon carrier gas the limit of detection is 0. 4 μg, response is linear with concentration, and it can be used for molecular weight determinations for values below 200 and for percentage composition studies. 5, record 18, English, - gas%20density%20balance

3, record 18, French, - balance%20%C3%A0%20densit%C3%A9%20gazeuse

The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. 2, record 23, French, - atmosph%C3%A8re%20terrestre

Matric potential is the most important component in soil, but is more difficult to visualize. Water will not freely leave soil unless soil is very wet. This is because of adhesion and cohesion. Imagine placing a clump of dry soil on a table, then dropping a drop of water onto the clump of dry soil. If you elevate the soil off of the table, will the water leap out of it, dropping to the table? Of course not. It will stay in the soil, held by adhesion, or what we often call matric forces. The symbol for matric potential is [psi subscript m]. These values are negative or zero, but never positive, because this water is not free to move to the zero state. ... The matric potential of a soil refers to the potential of the most easily removed molecule ... 5, record 24, English, - capillary%20potential

A simple arrangement of two cavities in series showed the feasibility of detecting traces of one gas in another. A klystron was used to generate microwave power which was fed through a wave guide to a transmission-type cavity. Another cavity was mounted in series with and tuned to the same frequency as the first; both cavities were identical except that the second had a gas inlet and outlet ports. From this measuring cell, its microwave energy was sent to a crystal detector. By frequency-modulating the klystron with a 50-cps sine wave voltage on the repeller, a burst of energy passes to the detector each time the generator frequency equals that of the cavities. The detector current is amplified and measured with an oscilloscope. At the beginning of the run, the two cavities are filled with the nitrogen carrier gas and, if the composition in one of the cavities is changed, its electrical size will change... causing a decrease of current from the detector. 1, record 30, English, - crystal%20detector
