The Germans designed a gun with a bore actually tapering in diameter from breech to muzzle, and for ammunition they constructed a projectile with a tungsten core and a soft metal body that would deform and squeeze in the reducing bore. The combination of reduced base area and constant gas pressure increased the projectile's velocity, and the "taper-bore" or "squeeze-bore" gun proved formidable. 1, record 1, English, - squeeze%2Dbore%20gun

In contrast to the automatic recording instruments monitoring volume increases at constant pressure, van de Craats maintained the volume constant and recorded automatically the pressure changes by means of an electromagnetic manometer devised by Kinkel.... In addition to van de Craats’ work with pressure-sensing devices, Novák and Janák constructed a detector which represents the pneumatic analog of a Wheatstone bridge, employing the dynamic effects of pneumatic obstructions such as capillaries and constrictions for determining component fractions emerging from the gas chromatographic column. Requiring no electrical power yet having an accuracy comparable to high precision thermal conductivity cells, it expresses the pressure differential, either differentially or integrally, caused by the eluted component as a diagonal from zero. Furthermore, the substance analyzed is never in contact with the detector. 1, record 14, English, - pressure%20detector

Hot-wire anemometer... is an important device used principally in research on air turbulence and boundary layers. There are two types, known as constant-voltage and constant-temperature. The cooling of an electrically heated fine wire placed in a gas stream which alters wire resistance depends on the fluid velocity. With the constant-voltage type, as soon as the gas starts flowing, the hot wire cools off, the voltage across a Wheatstone bridge connected to the wire is kept constant, and the calibrated galvanometer shows a reading related to the velocity. 5, record 18, English, - hot%2Dwire%20anemometer

Explosion wave. From the French, onde explosive, and coined by Bertholet, signifying that wave or flame which passes through a uniform gaseous mixture with a permanent maximum velocity. The rate of the explosion wave is a definite physical constant for each mixture. The explosion wave travels with the velocity of sound in the burning gas which itself is moving rapidly forward en masse in the same direction, so that the explosion wave is propagated far more rapidly than sound travels in the unburned gas. 1, record 19, English, - explosion%20wave

When specifying a mass flow control system, the first consideration is whether the process will take place at constant system pressure, constant throughput, and/or predetermined gas flow ratio. Another important consideration is whether system control will be automatic(microprocessor) or manual(setpoint potentiometers).... There are three major state-of-the-art systems that can be identified. The first uses a flowmeter(s)... as the primary transducer(s) to monitor mass flow. Using this format, a signal is compared in control circuitry to a setpoint signal. This generates an error voltage which is used to drive a valve, thus continuously controlling the flow. The second major type of system uses a pressure transducer as the primary sensing element. System pressure is held either constant or varied at a predetermined rate by controlling the mass flow rate of process gases. This leads to a third type of system that slaves valves and flowmeters to the primary sensing. 1, record 31, English, - mass%20flow%20controller

Flame Emissivity Detector. Another detector based on monitoring a specific property of a flame, its emissivity, was developed by Grant, who mixed coal gas in constant proportions with the effluent from a chromatographic column; this coal gas/effluent mixture burned at a wide stainless steel jet. The emissivity of the flame, changing as the flame's carbon content is varied, is measured with the aid of a metal reflector, glass condensing lens, and selenium photocell; these are held in place from each other at their proper optical distances.... For low background emissivity values, response is nonlinear. However, by controlling the coal gas flow rate to maintain emissivity between 0. 60 and 0. 80 mV, detector response is linear over a wide temperature range. 1, record 35, English, - flame%20emissivity%20detector

For the determination of combustible components of organic origin in gas chromatographic effluents, various principles of detection based on flame reactions have been utilized, namely, the hydrogen flame temperature, flame emissivity, and flame ionization detectors. In all reported systems, specific flame properties were monitored. Whereas Scott measured the flame temperature of the exit gas at a small jet and Grant the flame’s emissivity by optical means, Mc William and Dewar and Harley et al. advanced new detection concepts based on the electrical or ionization properties of hydrogen/oxygen flames. 1, record 35, English, - flame%20emissivity%20detector

Dynamic adsorption. The most common mode of adsorptive separation process employs a fixed bed, cyclic operation. As the wet process stream enters the fresh molecular-sieve bed, the water vapor is adsorbed in a finite length of bed called a mass-transfer zone(MTZ), the bed length through which the concentration of the adsorbate is reduced from essentially inlet to outlet conditions. As wet gas continues to flow, the bed may be divided into three distinct zones; the dynamic equilibrium zone with inlet gas, the MTZ, and the remaining active zone. In most molecular-adsorption systems, the MTZ becomes stabilized because of its favorable isotherm and moves at a constant speed. The bed is exhausted when the leading edge of the MTZ reaches the outlet end of the bed. High effective capacity results from high dynamic equilibrium capacity and a short MTZ. 1, record 38, English, - dynamic%20adsorption

Semiconductive Thin Film Detector. Using the known principle that the adsorption and desorption of gases cause a change in electrical conductivity of semiconductors, Seiyama et al. developed a new chromatographic detector for gaseous components.... The current, depending upon the resistance of the film, is converted to voltage by the variable resistance, which is fed without amplification to a recorder. Resistance also adjusts the input voltage of the recorder at desired sensitivity. Using zinc oxide as an example of a typical film material, the conductivity of its film maintains a fixed value when the nitrogen carrier gas is passed at a constant flow rate throught the borosilicate glass tube. When a small amount of another gas or vapor is added to the carrier gas, its conductivity is changed. 1, record 40, English, - semiconductive%20thin%20film%20detector

Isothermal Expansion and Contraction. An isothermal condition is the expansion or contraction of a gas which occurs without a change in temperature(...) During the expansion of a gas, the gas is cooled and therefore the heat necessary to keep the gas at a constant temperature must be obtained from an outside source. The heat obtained from the outside source must be exactly equal to that given up by the gas during its expansion, in order to keep the temperature constant. 1, record 45, English, - isothermal%20expansion
