CHAMPS is a modular microgravity research furnace developed for the National Research Council' s Space Division. It was flown in a Get-Away-Special(GAS) container aboard the space shuttle STS-67 in June 1993 to investigate GaAs [gallium arsenide] crystal growth by liquid phase electroepitaxy(LPEE). Combining the advantages of both dedicated and generic experimental facilities, CHAMPS allows investigators to specify their own experimental configuration while at the same time providing them with generic peripherals. Configurable hardware included thermal and gradient furnace, levitator, etc., while generic peripherals included control and data acquisition, thermal insulation, and ground support equipment.

One consequence of cabin pressurization is that the pressure inside the airplane might be 70 kPa (10 psi), while the pressure outside is only 15 kPa (2 psi). Gobar gas.... An effort is underway to spread a design method of converting this manure into methane to use as cooking fuel. A circular pit made of concrete is sealed and manure is added over time. Pipes lead from this container into the house, where gas is emitted at the cooking location. Residue from the combustion process comes out at a different location in a concentrated form and is used for fertilizer. Human waste may also be used with the addition of an outhouse, but this is sanitarily unfriendly to the Nepalis, even though the bacteria is killed in the combustion process.

The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). Several [internal cooling] systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods.... The super-cold air system with water vapor works much the same way [as the liquified gas system]. Here, very dry, subzero blowing air expands the parison. The expanded air is allowed to circulate through the bottle and exhaust. Immediately after the parison has expanded, a fine mist of water is injected into the cold air stream. As it flows, the water mist turns into snow. As the snow circulates through the container, it melts and then vaporizes. At the end of the molding cycle, the water mist is stopped, permitting the circulating air to purge and dry the interior before the mold is opened and the part is removed. Production rates can be improved as much as 50%.
