GAS FLARING [9 records]

Record 1 2015-03-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
OBS

Articulated flare platform.

OBS

articulated platform : An offshore platform, sometimes called on oscillating platform, which combines the advantages of fixed and floating structures... its main applications are in tanker mooring and loading, and flaring unwanted gas from offshore field.

OBS

flaring : The practice of burning unwanted gas or oil. Flaring was once a common sight on oil-fields, but nowadays it most often occurs on an offshore platform when a well is being tested and small quantities of hydrocarbons must be dispersed, or when unwanted refinery gases are burned.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
CONT

Record 4 2011-12-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Extraction
CONT

Well test flaring occurs during drilling and testing of all oil and gas wells. This is a standard practice used to determine the types of fluids the well can produce, the pressure and flow rates of fluids and other characteristics of the underground reservoir. If there are pipelines nearby, operators may be able to direct the test gas to a processing plant and this process is called "in-line testing. "This is not a practice that is feasible for some exploratory wells as there may not be any pipelines and processing plants nearby. The pressure, flow and composition of the gas has to be determined before it can be safely handled by the pipelines and processing plants. This information determines the economic value of the well and what type of production facilities will be installed. … Some well test flaring may be necessary after certain well servicing operations. The average flaring duration is 2. 5 days.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Extraction du pétrole et du gaz naturel
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Extraction
  • Crude Oil and Petroleum Products
DEF

The uncontrolled escape of the confined borehole gases to a free face (through fissures, cracks or weak rock horizons), reducing the heave action of the charge, before adequate breakage and displacement can occur.

CONT

Gas flaring and unnecessary gas venting or escapes during processing are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in northeast BC [British Columbia].

French

Domaine(s)
  • Extraction du pétrole et du gaz naturel
  • Pétroles bruts et dérivés
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Anti-pollution Measures
  • Waste Management
CONT

Landfill gas is a threat to human health and global warming, and flaring or utilizing it for energy greatly reduces its climate change impact. Burning LFG [landfill gas] also serves to mitigate its public health impact by destroying the majority of hazardous air pollutants in landfill gas through the combustion process. Furthermore, using LFG to produce electricity avoids the need to generate electricity at traditional power plants and thus reduces air pollution from these plants. However, LFG combustion produces minute quantities of dioxins, an extremely toxic group of chemicals that are harmful even in very small amounts.

Key term(s)
  • combustion of LFG

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures antipollution
  • Gestion des déchets
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
CONT

The LFG [landfill gas] collection system was installed to control odours and to prevent migration of gas into the ground surrounding the landfill. Collection and flaring of LFG created a potential opportunity to make use of the gas.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gestion des déchets
CONT

A line(pipe) that comes out of a mud-gas separator and carries the separated gas a safe distance away from the rig. Usually, the gas is disposed of by burning, or flaring.

CONT

In some cases pockets in flare line are unavoidable. Pockets may drain the small knock out drums fitted with heating coils or pump-out pumps.
