Intraocular gas tamponade has become an integral part of macular hole surgery. It is thought to improve success rates of hole closure by providing a tamponade which either forces the healing hole against the retinal pigment epithelium or isolating the hole from liquefied vitreous humor. Various measures have been employed to lengthen the duration of contact between the healing macula and the tamponade agent, including(1) face-down posturing,(2) the use of longer-acting gases and(3) lens extraction to increase the volume of gas used. 1, record 1, English, - intraocular%20gas%20tamponade

Water weighs 8. 3 pounds a gallon. Formation pressures can be up to 16 pounds per gallon coming the other way. While you’re drilling that hole and setting those pipes to create a pressure integrity conduit, you use a mixture — barite and other chemicals — so that you take water at 8. 3 pounds a gallon and make it 18 pounds a gallon, and you pump that into the well as you drill the hole. Then that 16-pound-per-gallon force that oil and gas want to come in with, you’re holding that down with the mud at 18 pounds a gallon. 1, record 8, English, - pressure%20integrity%20conduit

This type of spray can is a canister containing liquid under pressure from pressurized vapor in equilibrium with another liquid, which often also dissolves the payload. When the can's valve is opened, the liquid is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist. As gas expands to drive out the payload, some propellant evaporates inside the can to maintain an even pressure. Outside the can, the droplets of propellant evaporate rapidly, leaving the payload suspended as very fine particles or droplets. 2, record 12, English, - aerosol%20spray

Two main types of sample splitter are in common use, known as calibrated lead devices, and dividing valves. Most of these are based upon the principle that the head of the capillary column constitutes only a small proportion of the total outlet from the sample injection block. As the carrier gas enters the block it carries a small amount of the sample into the capillary column while the remainder is vented away through a larger opening. This can be done by having the capillary column held at the axis of a circular hole in the injection block, or by having it forming a narrow arm of a T-or Y-piece at the column head. In either case the amount going into the capillary column can often be further regulated by means of a tapered needle control. 1, record 14, English, - sample%20splitter

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. A stuffed shield binds several kinds of textile layers similar to a bulletproof vest between itself and the wall. This is a reinforced Whipple shield. 2, record 25, English, - debris%20shield

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas. 1, record 27, English, - plasma%2Dkeyhole%20welding%20process

A recently developed instrument known as an "emanometer, "or "radon sniffer, "has been used to measure the radon content of water, oils and soils. Since radon is a noble gas, it does not form chemical compounds. It moves freely through pore spaces, joints and faults for distances up to several hundred feet. It will also dissolve in ground water and so move about in the subsurface. Air samples are obtained from the soil by drilling a short hole(2-3 ft) and pumping air from the hole through filters and a dryer into an ionization chamber or thin ZnS scintillator. Water samples are degassed and the air-gas mixture goes to the detecting chamber. 1, record 30, English, - emanometer

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments. For burner adjustment the serviceman measures the draft that provides air for combustion and the smoker or soot content of the exiting flue gases.... Measurements are made through a small hole in the flue pipe within 46 cm of the flue gas exit on the furnace. If the layout of the flue pipe makes this impossible, the serviceman has to make a hole wherever he can.... Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal. 1, record 44, English, - smoke%20spot%20tester
