A form of gas or liquid flowmeter consisting of a diaphragm in which there is an orifice placed transversely across a pipe, the difference in pressure on the two sides of the diaphragm is a measure of flow velocity.

An orifice meter is an inferential meter in which the fluid velocity and flowrate are inferred from the pressure drop occurring through the known area of an orifice plate. Specifically, orifice meter flow is calculated from the flowing gas pressure and temperature, differential pressure drop occurring across the restriction of the meter's orifice plate, the meter geometry including the meter tube's inside diameter and orifice plate bore, and the gas composition.

A torch in which temperatures as high as 50,000º are achieved by injecting a plasma gas tangentially into an electric arc formed between electrodes in a chamber; the resulting vortex of hot gases emerges at very high speed through a hole in the negative electrode, to form a jet for welding, spraying of molten metal, and cutting of hard rock or hard metals.

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas.

An injection port is necessary in all g. c. [gas chromatography] and h. p. l. c. [high-performance liquid chromatography] systems in which syringe injection is employed.
