Gas-fired water heaters have a gas burner located below the tank, a thermostatic switch, a gas valve and a pilot light. The thermostat will open the gas valve when it senses the water temperature at the bottom of the tank has dropped below the present limit. Gas flows to the burner and is ignited by the pilot light, heating the tank from below. In addition, the hot exhaust gases are vented through a hollow core in the center of the tank to help heat the water. The exhaust is then passed into the draft hood and to the vent connector where it is discharged to a chimney flue.

Conventional atmospheric gas furnace. This is the most commonly used gas heating appliance in Canada and also the least efficient. The furnace uses a naturally aspirating atmospheric burner(air for combustion enters the combustion chamber freely) and a standing(always lit) pilot light. Electric ignition has replaced the standing pilot light on some new furnaces of this type.

Furnace Controls. Gas furnaces are equipped with a Combination Control Unit. This device usually combines a pressure regulator, automatic gas valve, main shut-off valve, pilot line shut-off valve, pilot light adjustment screw and a pilot lighting reset dial and a thermocouple safety control. This combination control is the heart of the gas heating appliance. The adjustment and maintenance of this component requires specialized knowledge of gas heating systems.
