The world’s first laboratory-grown beef burger was flipped out of a petri dish and into a frying pan on Monday, with food tasters declaring it tasted "close to meat." Grown in vitro from cattle stem cells at a cost of 250,000 euros ($332,000), the burger was cooked and eaten in front of television cameras to gain the greatest media coverage for the culmination of a five-year science experiment. Resembling a standard circular-shaped red meat patty, it was created by knitting together 20,000 strands of laboratory-grown protein, combined with other ingredients normally used in burgers, such as salt, breadcrumbs and egg powder. Red beet juice and saffron were added to give it color. 1, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The first laboratory-produced meat patty (cultured beef burger) presented in London on August 5, 2013, by Dr. Mark Post, a physiologist from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, was dubbed the "Frankenburger." The professor and his colleagues produced the meat-like substance by cultivating muscle tissue from cow stem cells in fetal serum and other growth-promoting materials (vitamines, amino acids, growth hormones, sugar, etc.). The laboratory-grown meat at this stage of development is prohibitively expensive, but might one day become a substitute for "real" meat. The product needs to be enhanced to improve its texture, taste and appearance. Some scientists predict that cultured meat might be commercially available within a decade. Others say that it will be possible to grow it in one’s own kitchen within 20 years. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The development of meat substitutes is praised on ethical grounds by animal rights or welfare activists since these products have the potential to greatly reduce the inhumane raising and slaughtering of animals raised for meat. Environmentalists, economists and scientists support these products since they might one day be a cost-effective means of meeting world demands for meat, while greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, as well as the use of water, farmland and animal feed that make intensive animal farming unsustainable. On the other hand, natural food advocates have serious doubts concerning ingredients needed to grow and enhance these products, and the long term safety of their consumption; and meat industry proponents argue that the technology still requires stem cell donors(the cells from a single donor cannot replicate indefinitely) and that the product remains a far cry from "real" meat. Only time will tell if these products will, in a perhaps not so distant future, entirely replace, or only supplement, the meat industry. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 3 OBS
cultured beef hamburger: A "hamburger" is a minced beef patty. Terms such as "cultured beef hamburger" could therefore be considered pleonastic. The term "burger" is the shortened form of "hamburger." While burgers are traditionally made of beef, non-beef burgers have become popular, and modifiers such as "veggie," "tuna," "chicken," "nut," and "soya" are used to describe them. Given this relatively new reality, the use of seemingly pleonastic terms such as "cultured beef burger" may be justified. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 4 OBS
The combination of terms such as "hamburger," "cultured," "laboratory," "in vitro" and their short forms to create neologisms designating this product yields an impressive number of synonyms. This will remain the case as long as terminology used to describe this relatively new concept is not well established. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 5 OBS
synthetic hamburger; artificial hamburger: The terms "synthetic meat" and "artificial meat" designate products that imitate meat but that are not necessarily laboratory-grown from animal cells. Hence, the use of qualifiers such as "synthetic" and "artificial" might lead to confuse a cultured hamburger with, for example, a soy-based burger. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 6 OBS
Terms such as "Frankenburger" that do not include the modifier "beef" might very well be used some day to designate similar laboratory-grown products made from animal cells other than beef. 13, record 4, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger

Oil slick dispersants. When oil ... is treated with a suitable surface active agent and agitation applied, the oil is broken up into particles ... so small that they constitute an oil-in-water emulsion ... Dispersants serve to increase the surface area of an oil spill and disperse oil globules throughout the layer volume water. This causes an accelerated degradation of oil by microbiological action. 7, record 12, English, - dispersant
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The chemicals used to disperse the oil are emulsifiers. Although a chemist would never confuse the terms dispersant and emulsifier, the former designating a product which encourages the distribution of finely divided solids in a fluid, either liquid or gas, the latter referring to a product which encourages the colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another, the terms are synonymous in the field of oil pollution control. This is explained by the following sentence taken from "The Control of oil pollution on the sea and inland waters", edited by J. Wardley-Smith(source COCOB) :"It was found... [that the product] when sprayed on to the oil, effectively softened and dispersed it by means of emulsification... "The dispersion is accomplished by products which emulsify the oil, i. e., emulsifiers. Dispersion is used in its general sense and hence dispersant simply means a product that causes spreading. Also dispersant is used more frequently than emulsifier. 8, record 12, English, - dispersant

Gas-solid cocurrent downflow(downer) reactors offer many advantages over gas-solid cocurrent upflow(riser) reactors, such as better gas-solids contact efficiency, more uniform gas and solids residence time distributions and the potential capability of handling higher solids-gas loading ratios. These features make the downer an excellent reactor for fast reactions and especially for fast reactions where the intermediate is the product. This new type of reactor has so far not been well developed but has huge potential for many industrial processes such as fluid catalytic cracking of crude oil where further improvement in the gas-solids contact efficiency will lead to significant economic gains, pyrolysis of some solids waste into valuable organic products which provides a more energy efficient alternative to waste incineration... 1, record 14, English, - cocurrent%20downflow%20reactor

The highly-efficient and economically-feasible technology for bitumen recovery from US oil sands using a water extraction approach was developed at the end of the last century. This water-based bitumen extraction process has been optimized based on observations and analysis of microscopic mechanisms of bitumen release from oil sands and the bitumen transfer to a froth product as well as measurements of interfacial properties of bitumen. The wetting mechanisms that occur in the diluent-assisted water-based processing of US oil sands include bitumen film rupture and recession on sand grains and bitumen transfer to nucleated and injected gas bubbles. 2, record 32, English, - water%2Dbased%20bitumen%20extraction%20process

Basically, the gasification of solid fuels takes place at elevated temperatures. The heat required for the heating and conversion, is either provided through partial combustion(autothermic process) or through supply of external heat(allothermic process). Compared to the autothermic gasification, the allothermic gasification has the advantage that the fuel does not have to be partially burned in the gasification zone, in order to provide the necessary heat. In the allothermic gasification, the heat can be provided from any external sources, such as for instance high-temperature core reactors, but also from combustion chambers, wherein a fraction of the gas product is burned. 3, record 34, English, - allothermal%20gasification

The Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing subsector is based on the transformation of crude petroleum and coal into usable products. The dominant process is petroleum refining that involves the separation of crude petroleum into component products through such techniques as cracking and distillation. In addition, this subsector includes establishments that primarily further process refined petroleum and coal products and produce products, such as asphalt coatings and petroleum lubricating oils. However, establishments that manufacture petrochemicals from refined petroleum are classified in Industry 32511, Petrochemical Manufacturing. 3, record 42, English, - refined%20petroleum%20and%20coal%20products

Greenhouse gas emissions from the pulp and paper industry decreased 19% from 1990 to 1999, while product output increased 27%. These diverging trends result from a 42% reduction in coal and heavy fuel oil use, increased use of natural gas and electricity, as well as energy efficiency improvements. For example, natural gas provides more than twice the energy supplied by coal and refined petroleum products to the sub-sector. 5, record 42, English, - refined%20petroleum%20and%20coal%20products

The Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis(SMDS) plant now operational at Bintulu, Malaysia, is the latest in a series of partnership projects between Shell companies and the people of Malaysia that stretches back for more than 100 years. The new plant uses advanced technology to convert natural gas, abundantly available from the Central Luconia field offshore Sarawak, into liquid fuels of high purity. These fuels can also be used as components to upgrade lower quality stock derived from conventional crude oil processing. In addition, the plant can produce high-value waxes, as well as feedstocks for detergents and lubricants. The product mix can be varied to meet market needs. The SMDS technology was developed at the Shell laboratory in Amsterdam(KSLA) over a period of 20 years. After commercial and technical assessment, Bintulu was chosen in preference to sites in other parts of the world as an appropriate location for the employment of SMDS technology in the first commercial plant. 2, record 43, English, - Shell%27s%20middle%20distillates%20synthesis%20technology

The lack of margins in selectivity and the sensitivity of etching rates to other variables such as loading(i. e., the total area to be etched) in plasma etching have made it necessary to develop a positive means of determining the moment etching should stop, rather than relying of fixed times. Most end-point detectors developed to date are based on gas analysis of one sort or another. They determine the instant that either the material being etched has largely disappeared or the material beneath that layer is being attacked. Detecting spectral lines in the plasma related to a particular reaction product is the simplest way, but it cannot be employed in all cases. 1, record 52, English, - plasma%20end%2Dpoint%20detector

1, record 56, English, - gas%2Dsolid%20reactor

2, record 64, French, - structure%20gonflable

Preparation of bleach chemicals. All conventional bleaching chemicals can be produced from air, water and brine(NaCl solution) utilizing varying amounts of energy. Since the raw materials are cheap, it follows that manufacturing costs are mainly a function of how much energy is expended. Oxygen. Two systems are utilized for oxygen generation : cryogenic air separation and absorption-based separation.... The adsorption-based oxygen plant yields a gas product and is suitable only for onsite generation.... adsorption systems separate air at ambient temperatures using molecular sieve adsorbents. The adsorbent picks up nitrogen and other impurities at the system feed pressure, while the product oxygen passes straight through the bed. After the bed is saturated with nitrogen, it is regenerated by lowering the pressure to release the adsorbed components. Adsorption processes are cyclical, and multiple beds are used to maintain continuous oxygen production. 1, record 67, English, - adsorption%2Dbased%20separation
