Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well.

L'air étant composé d'azote et l'oxygène, quand la combustion a lieu, elle a pour effet de voir disparaître l'oxygène qui réagit avec l'huile pour donner une huile oxydée, du CO2 et de l'eau. Reste l'azote qui par gravité va rester sous forme de chapeau de gaz (ou «gas cap») dans la partie supérieure du réservoir. Pour évacuer cet azote et éviter qu'il ne fasse cesser la combustion, il est proposé de le produire par des puits verticaux situés latéralement par rapport aux deux puits déjà cités. A lumping method for estimating the properties or the behaviour of liquid and/or vapour hydrocarbon phases from data relative to a reference set consisting of hydrocarbon mixtures in a series of thermodynamic states resulting from determined conditions of production of an underground hydrocarbon reservoir, characterized in that it comprises :-grouping each one of said hydrocarbon mixtures into at least three constituents(V, I, H), none of these constituents corresponding to a particular selection of base components or pseudo-components that would be used for a detailed compositional description of the fluids, considering that the gas phases resulting from the separation under surface conditions of each one of the hydrocarbon mixtures are mixtures from which third constituent(H) is excluded, and that the oil phases resulting from the separation under surface conditions of each one of the hydrocarbon mixtures are mixtures from which first constituent(V) is excluded,-determining by material balance the compositions of the separation products comprising, for the gaseous products, at least the first and the second constituent(V, I) in variable proportions and, for the liquid products, at least the second and the third constituent(I, H) in variable proportions, and-determining the at least three-constituent composition of each hydrocarbon mixture of the reference set by combination of the products of the separation thereof in proportion to the amounts of each separation product.

Well test flaring occurs during drilling and testing of all oil and gas wells. This is a standard practice used to determine the types of fluids the well can produce, the pressure and flow rates of fluids and other characteristics of the underground reservoir. If there are pipelines nearby, operators may be able to direct the test gas to a processing plant and this process is called "in-line testing. "This is not a practice that is feasible for some exploratory wells as there may not be any pipelines and processing plants nearby. The pressure, flow and composition of the gas has to be determined before it can be safely handled by the pipelines and processing plants. This information determines the economic value of the well and what type of production facilities will be installed. … Some well test flaring may be necessary after certain well servicing operations. A non-thermal recovery method which uses gaseous solvents to increase oil recovery.

Vapex (vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil.

The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour(ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone(aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well.

De plus, le solvant utilisé dans le procédé VAPEX peut être réutilisé. Avec le procédé VAPEX, les solvants vaporisés sont injectés dans le réservoir par un puits horizontal. Le solvant dilue le bitume, ce qui en réduit la viscosité et permet à l'huile d'être drainé vers les puits de production par gravité.

Le VAPEX est un procédé équivalent au SAGD («steam-assisted gravity drainage», «drainage par gravité à l'aide de vapeur») dans lequel la vapeur d'eau est remplacée par un hydrocarbure injecté sous forme vapeur, en général du propane ou du naphta (coupe de pétrole proche du nonane).
