The top of the inversion layer is where the air reaches its highest temperature. The air below that level cannot ascend. (Because each parcel of air below has a cooler temperature, it is therefore denser, and gravity keeps it trapped in place.)

Warm air has formed a layer on top of cooler surface air. This layer is called the temperature inversion. This means that temperatures actually rise as we measure farther up into the air. Little or no mixing occurs and concentrations of atmospheric particulate pollution and vapors are trapped below the level where temperatures again decrease with altitude. This point is referred to as the top of the inversion. Inversions can occur at the surface or aloft in the atmosphere.

There are four widely used operating configurations for gas fired appliances : modulating fire, on-off, hi-low, and multi-stage firing. Modulating fire is accomplished by mechanically varying the size of the gas admittance opening of one or more special "modulating" gas valves. With the gas valve completely open the boiler fires at it's full fire rate. The unit is said to be at "full turndown" when it fires at it's lowest firing rate. The "turndown ratio" is the ratio of full fire rate to full turndown firing rate and is a function of boiler design. A turn down ratio of 5 : 1 would indicate that a boiler is capable of a full turndown firing rate of 20%(5 : 1(100% fire : 20% fire).

An inspirator mixer, does not require a blower but does require high pressure gas,(can be dangerous) and is not very economical or efficient. The tip or nozzle is usually always a flame retention type tip. The reason this burner requires high pressure gas is that the gas needs to be moving at a high rate of speed in order to induce enough air for proper combustion. It is usually used for propane and in a situation where no electricity is available. If you have high pressure gas it is recommended that you use a regulator and switch to an aspirator mixer type system.

The Hot-Mix Paving Industry.... The volume of exhaust gas required to dry each ton of aggregate increases by more than 10% for each additional percent of moisture removed. Maintaining a production rate with increased moisture means that more exhaust gas may be created from combustion and evaporation of water than the fan can remove.
