Subject field(s)
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
CONT

The air charger system uses a quiet oiless air compressor to put large amounts of oxygen into the retention tank.... The oxygen [is] forced to the bottom of the tank through a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe... Once the air is expelled it... mixes with the iron and manganese for proper oxidation. The water then flows to a properly sized multi media filter which will remove all oxidized iron and manganese. The air charger system also is effective in the removal of hydrogen sulfide gas.

The coated particle fuels have been designed in the past for "high temperature reactors"(HTR). The interesting aspects of such fuel are :(i) the good thermal exchange between the gas coolant and the fuel as a result of the small fuel particles, and(ii) the retention of the fission products within the particle as a result of the tight coatings surrounding the fissile kernel flux conditions.

DEF

The surface retention of solid, liquid, or gas molecules or of ions by a solid or liquid, as opposed to absorption, the penetration of substances into the bulk of the solid or liquid.

CONT

Adsorption [refers to a] process of extracting a pollutant by causing it to be attracted to and attached to an adsorbent cleaner.

CONT

The adsorption of radioactive waste relates to the capability of soils, clay, etc., to retain the material and hence prevent it from reaching the biosphere.

OBS

Broadly, adsorption at a solid-liquid interphase may be physical, electro-chemical or chemical. ... Ionic adsorption includes common-ion adsorption to the mineral lattice, and ion-exchange between the surface lattice-charges of solid and the ions in solution (the surface-modifying effects utilised in the flotation process).

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biotechnology
DEF

In chromatography the solid poching or support material, which may be in powder, gel or sheet form.

OBS

In a wider sense, "stationary phase" also refers to the immobile phase in all forms of chromatography.

OBS

The solid support itself should not be identified with the stationary phase.

CONT

In gas chromatography, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, or some other inert gas is employed as the mobile phase. With gas-solid chromatography, a stationary phase of an adsorptive solid, such as carbon, alumina, or silica, either is packed in the column as small particles or is coated on the inside wall as a film. Retention, in either case, is by weak adsorptive forces between the solute molecules and adsorptive sites on the solid material.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie analytique
  • Biotechnologie
DEF

PHR

The GDS [Gas Delivery System] is a 4-PU passive drawer. There are no rack data or power connections. The drawer will contain a Dapco-sealed Minicel foam block wrapped in beta cloth capable of storing up to five bottles of calibration and/or respiratory gas mixtures. The drawer includes 2 Lexan plates that will be attached to the internal surface of the drawer side panels. The Lexan plates will center the foam block in the drawer and have grooves that allow the bottle retention plate(guillotine) to slide in perpendicular to the Lexan plates in 2 locations. The guillotine is placed in front of the bottles for launch and landing and placed behind the bottles for operation.

DEF

A mixing device in which a jet of gas is used to entrain primary air at a rate proportional to the gas flow rate.

CONT

An inspirator mixer, does not require a blower but does require high pressure gas,(can be dangerous) and is not very economical or efficient. The tip or nozzle is usually always a flame retention type tip. The reason this burner requires high pressure gas is that the gas needs to be moving at a high rate of speed in order to induce enough air for proper combustion. It is usually used for propane and in a situation where no electricity is available. If you have high pressure gas it is recommended that you use a regulator and switch to an aspirator mixer type system.
