Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) is one of the so-called hyphenated analytical techniques. It is actually two techniques that are combined to form a single method for analyzing mixtures of organic chemicals. Gas chromatography separates the components of a mixture, and mass spectrometry characterizes each of the components individually. The combination of the two techniques allows for both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of a sample containing a number of organic compounds. The uses for GC-MS are numerous, including chemical, geological, environmental, and forensic research. 5, record 2, English, - gas%20chromatography%2Dmass%20spectrometry

Chemical ionization uses a reagent gas to ionize sample molecules through ion–molecule reactions in the gas phase. The reagent gas( e. g., methane) first undergoes electron ionization, generating a molecular ion which then fragments and/or reacts with other reagent gas molecules and ions. Since the reagent gas is present in significantly higher concentrations than the sample, ionization of sample molecules occurs through reactions with reagent gas ions, rather than by electron ionization. 4, record 4, English, - chemical%20ionization

To be an analytical biochemist, you must be curious, meticulous, and driven to discover. Analytical biochemists are proficient at advanced biochemical techniques such as liquid or gas chromatography—isolating the components of a sample for further investigation. Another technique commonly used by analytical biochemists is liquid-liquid extraction—a technique that uses liquids with different properties to separate contents of a solution for collection and analysis. An analytical biochemist will typically examine and manipulate various samples with the goals of identifying a sample's components and determining how the individual components can be used for further discovery of new or significant compounds. 2, record 5, English, - analytical%20biochemist

Two main types of sample splitter are in common use, known as calibrated lead devices, and dividing valves. Most of these are based upon the principle that the head of the capillary column constitutes only a small proportion of the total outlet from the sample injection block. As the carrier gas enters the block it carries a small amount of the sample into the capillary column while the remainder is vented away through a larger opening. This can be done by having the capillary column held at the axis of a circular hole in the injection block, or by having it forming a narrow arm of a T-or Y-piece at the column head. In either case the amount going into the capillary column can often be further regulated by means of a tapered needle control. 1, record 25, English, - sample%20splitter

The detector was responsive down to the 10 SUP-SUP 1 SUP 3 g level for C SUB 2-C SUB 1 SUB 1 hydrocarbons. Atmospheric hydrocarbons could be determined at parts per billion or parts per trillion levels by using gas chromatography with the detector via cryogenic concentration of a small volume of air sample.(Pascal Data Base). 2, record 36, English, - flame%20ionization

The physical states of the mobile and stationary phases give rise to four basic types of chromatography: gas-liquid chromatography (GLC), gas-solid chromatography (GSC), liquid - liquid chromatography (LLC), and liquid-solid chromatography (LSC). Of the four basic types of chromatography, the two gas systems are independent and not subject to subdivisions. Thus the terms "gas-liquid chromatography" and "gas-solid chromatography" adequately identify the techniques involved. The liquid systems are not as easily described and are not mutually exclusive, which can lead to considerable confusion. 5, record 37, English, - gas%2Dsolid%20chromatography

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling. 2, record 41, English, - advanced%20gradient%20heating%20facility

The thermopile heat of combustion detector is at the heart of each heating value transmitter. Air is used as a heat transfer media and flows around the combustion chamber. Any increase in the heat produced by the combustion of a controlled sample of process gas is immediately sensed and reported to the microprocessor. Air enters the combustion chamber on the outside cold junctions where its heat is measured, then flows down the outside of the thermopile towards the viewer to turn through 180° past the end of the thermopile assembly and then flows up through the heat exchanger... to mix with the heated flue gases from the burner. 3, record 48, English, - combustion%20detector

An injection port is necessary in all g. c. [gas chromatography] and h. p. l. c. [high-performance liquid chromatography] systems in which syringe injection is employed. The injection port joins the top of the column to the mobile phase supply line, and has a third outlet through a small orifice covered by a self-sealing septum. Injection of samples is done by inserting the hypodermic syringe containing the sample through this septum so that the point of the needle is immediately above the head of the column. Design of the injection port must be such that it can be maintained at a uniform temperature and will possess a very small dead volume. 4, record 50, English, - injection%20port

4, record 50, French, - chambre%20d%27injection

There are two basic types of aspirator-burners that are used in atomic absorption. The first is the total-consumption burner... The fuel and oxidant(support) gases are mixed and combust at the tip of the burner. The sample is drawn up into the flame by the "Venturi effect, "by the support gas. The gas creates a partial vacuum above the capillary barrel, causing the sample to be forced up the capillary. It is broken into a fine spray at the tip where the gases are turbulently mixed and burned. This is the usual process of "nebulization. "The burner is called total consumption because the entire aspirated sample enters the flame. 1, record 51, English, - total%2Dconsumption%20burner

2, record 59, French, - vanne%20%C3%A0%20gaz

In 1963, Bevan and Thoburn introduced a new concept in gas chromatographic detectors-a quantitative integral detector. These investigators made a practical gravimetric detector using an automatic-recording vacuum balance. Since the gravimetric detector integrates, a step-to-step pattern is provided instead of the usual chromatographic succession of peaks. The weight increase from each step-to-step increment is the amount of component present in that fraction and the total weight increase is the total sample weight. If absorption is complete, calibration with synthetic mixtures is not necessary. 1, record 60, English, - gravimetric%20detector

2, record 61, French, - n%C3%A9buliseur%20pneumatique

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal. 1, record 65, English, - smoke%20spot%20tester
