Mass analyzers are systems designed to identify and measure materials according to their molecular weights. The technique has been adapted for many other applications ranging from physics research and the identification of complex molecular structure to assuring the integrity of the fuel systems on the space shuttle and routine helium leak detection. While the uses of mass analyzers in the microelectronics industry include some exotic applications, such as SIMS, the greatest number of systems are used for various types of gas analysis. Applications for mass analyzers include process monitoring, process engineering and control in such areas as evaporation, MBE, sputter etch and deposition, plasma etch and deposition, ion, implantation, LPCVD, CVD, and diffusion furnaces. Another important application is high purity gas certification and electronic gas mixture verification. 2, record 13, English, - mass%20analyser

The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station (ISS); in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair (submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous (e.g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments: critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. [Text followed by an illustration of a BCAT-3 sample holder.] 4, record 23, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy(BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization(BCAT-3-SC) and critical point(BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT-3 and 4 : Critical Point(BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4 : Polydisperse(BCAT-4-Poly).... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3(BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles(tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes : critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization. 5, record 23, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

1, record 28, French, - g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rateur%20d%27air%20chaud%20%C3%A0%20condensation%20aliment%C3%A9%20au%20gaz

The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. In this region of the atmosphere, Hydrogen and Helium are the prime components and are only present at extremely low densities. 3, record 30, English, - Earth%27s%20atmosphere

The shoeboxsized spectrophotometer-called MAESTRO(Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation)-is the most advanced in a long line of MSC instruments that have flown on balloons, high-altitude research aircraft and space shuttle missions over the past 10 years. MAESTRO and other spectrophotometers operate on the principle that different gases absorb different wavelengths of light, ranging from short, ultraviolet(UV) rays to long, near-infrared ones. Each gas, therefore, has its own "fingerprint" or distinct spectrum of absorption. This makes it possible to identify which gases are present from changes in the brightness of sunlight at different wavelengths between light coming directly from the Sun and light that has passed through the atmosphere on the way to the spectrophotometer. Ozone, for example, absorbs UV light and is, therefore, essential to preventing high levels of these rays from reaching the Earth's surface. As the Sun rises and sets, its rays slice through different layers of the atmosphere and out into space. MAESTRO will be equipped with more than 2000 separate detectors record the full spectrum of wavelengths emitted by direct sunlight and by sunlight travelling through these layers. These data will then be analyzed to provide precise measurements of gases and aerosol particles at different heights in the atmosphere. SCISAT-1 will orbit the Earth 15 times a day at a height of 650 kilometres, allowing MAESTRO to take measurements of 30 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. 3, record 34, English, - spectrophotometer%20MAESTRO

2, record 34, French, - spectrophotom%C3%A8tre%20MAESTRO

The electron discharge emission is facilitated by converting Xenon Gas to Plasma using thermionic electron emission and expelling the Xenon Plasma from the ORU [Orbital Replaceable Unit]. 5, record 41, French, - neutraliseur%20de%20plasmas

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 44, English, - annular%20slot

The Sun emits a steady flow of electrically-charged particles called the solar wind. As the solar wind expands supersonically into space, it creates a magnetized bubble around the Sun--the heliosphere. Eventually, the solar wind runs into the electrically-charged particles and magnetic field in the interstellar gas. The solar wind abruptly slows down from supersonic to subsonic speed, creating a termination shock. Before both spacecraft travel beyond the heliopause into interstellar space, they must pass through that shockwave. 2, record 46, English, - termination%20shock

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. A stuffed shield binds several kinds of textile layers similar to a bulletproof vest between itself and the wall. This is a reinforced Whipple shield. 2, record 47, English, - debris%20shield

Orbiting Astronomical Observatory(OAO), series of four orbiting observatories launched between 1966 and 1972 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to provide astronomical data in the ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths filtered out by the earth's atmosphere. Only two of the four launches were successful, however. OAO-2, launched in 1978, which carried two large telescopes in addition to a cluster of four ultraviolet telescopes, four photoelectric telescopes, and a number of spectrometers and other devices, weighed 4, 200 lb(1, 900 kg) and was the heaviest satellite orbited to that time. Working primarily with ultraviolet radiation, it was able to photograph very young stars. OAO-3, which was also called Copernicus, was launched in 1972. Carrying what was at that time the largest telescope ever orbited and three smaller X-ray telescopes, OAO-3 was primarily used in the study of ultraviolet radiation from interstellar gas and dust and from stars near the edges of the Milky Way. 2, record 51, English, - Orbiting%20Astronomical%20Observatory

Interstellar gas and dust. The main constituents of our galaxy or Milky Way are the stars. However, the space between the stars is not empty, but is occupied with a significant amount of matter in the form of gas and dust... Roughly speaking the stars constitute 70% and the gas 30% of the mass of the Milky Way in the neighborhood of the sun... By far most of the interstellar gas is hydrogen. As of the present time, only the atomic form of hydrogen has ben detected, although it is certainly possible that molecular hydrogen may also be found. 2, record 58, English, - interstellar%20gas

The position of the Gibbs surface is often defined experimentally as the surface which encloses the volume of space from which the solid excludes helium gas(the so-called helium dead-space), and is associated with the assumptions that the volume of the solid is unaffected by the adsorption of the component and that helium is not adsorbed by the solid. This requires that the measurement of the helium dead-space be made at a sufficiently high temperature. 1, record 71, English, - helium%20dead%2Dspace

High-Consistency System. Figure 11-18 shows a representative system where pulp is handled in the 25% to 28% consistency range. Typically, a press is used to raise the feed consistency to about 30%. Fresh caustic or oxidized white liquor along with the magnesium protector is added to the pulp at the discharge of the press. A thick stock pump then transfers the pulp to a fluffer via a feed pipe in which a gas-tight plug is formed. The fluffed pulp flows down the pressurized reactor as a loose bed, while gaseous oxygen is continuously dissolved into the liquid phase and reacted with the pulp.... Oxygen gas is added to either top or bottom to maintain a partial pressure within the 90 to 130 psi range. Relief is taken from the head space at the top of the tower to remove combustibles and other noncondensible gases, and control overall reactor pressure. At the bottom of the tower, the reacted pulp is diluted with post-oxygen filtrate and pumped at about 6% consistency to a blow tank. 2, record 74, English, - high%2Dconsistency%20oxygen%20delignification

A typical cyclone is illustrated in Figure 6 [p. 15]. Dust-laden gas tangentially enters the annular space between the cyclone body and the outlet tube, and begins to traverse a helical path(shown by the solid flow line) called the "main vortex". Near the bottom of the cone, the axial direction of the helix reverses, as shown by the dotted line, and forms the "vortex core". The tangential velocity is greatest at a radial distance from the centerline of 0. 4 to 0. 8 the radius of the gas outlet tube. The diameter of the vortex core is usually 0. 2 to 0. 4 times the diameter of the gas outlet. The tangential direction of flow is the same in both the main vortex and the vortex core, so that centrifugal separating forces are exerted on the particles in both sections of flow. 1, record 83, English, - main%20vortex

Low energy gas(LEG) is produced by air gasification processes where a portion of the input wood(about 20 percent) is combusted with air to provide process heat. LEG can be used to displace fossil fuels by retrofitting oil or gas-fired boilers, kilns, dryers and space heaters. In addition, it can be cooled and cleaned for use in internal combustion engines to generate shaft power or electricity. Due to the low energy content, economics dictate that the gas be used immediately and not piped great distances. 1, record 85, English, - low%20energy%20gas
