CONT

Air quality measuring devices were installed in the province yesterday to test the level of pollution.

CONT

This Air Quality Sensor for Wireless Weather Stations measures pollen, dust and many other volatile air particles.

CONT

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. While airborne pollutants are measured in micrograms per cubic meter, taking steps before their concentration reaches critical levels can still save lungs, and lives. City buses equipped with air quality sensors and GPS receivers report in real-time exactly where and by exactly how much air quality has deteriorated.

OBS

Air pollutants occur both outdoors or indoors, and can be natural or man-made.... Typical urban air pollutants from man-made activities include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter.... Common sources of these primary pollutants include power station and industrial plants... and road transport... Ozone is a secondary pollutant, formed in the air as a result of chemical reactions.... Common indoor air pollutants include carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide from faulty gas heaters and cookers, carbon monoxide and benzene from cigarette smoke, and volatile organic compounds(VOCs) from synthetic furnishings, vinyl flooring and paints. In addition, there are biological pollutants such as dust mites and mould.

CONT

The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station (ISS); in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair (submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous (e.g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments: critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. [Text followed by an illustration of a BCAT-3 sample holder.]

CONT

BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy(BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization(BCAT-3-SC) and critical point(BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT-3 and 4 : Critical Point(BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4 : Polydisperse(BCAT-4-Poly).... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3(BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles(tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes : critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization.

In total, Volkswagen's power stations consume some 720, 000 tonnes of coal equivalent each year(tCE/a).... To ensure that they comply with threshold limit values, power station emissions are monitored continuously. Figures for SO2, NOx, CO, dust, desulphurization efficiency and flue gas volume are measured and recorded on a central emissions computer.

CONT

In this paper we consider the relative usefulness of taxes on SO2 emissions as instruments to reduce environmental damages caused by acid rain phenomena. As an illustration, we examine the likely effects of the application of a hypothetical Spanish sulphur tax. Since it is possible to recognize the amount of sulphur dioxides which will be emitted in the combustion of different types of fossil fuels, a product tax accompanied by fiscal rebates for desulphurizing processes is used as a proxy of the genuine emissions tax.

The project would be designed for naphtha or natural gas. The fuel linkage for the project was cleared by the Ministry of Power and Natural Gas. The fuel for the plant would be transported either from... Bombay or Madras by rail up to Sankarpally railway station, a mere two km away from the project site.

CONT

Energy needs to be looked at in totality, and not in segments and compartments. A matching fuel policy, for the power sector would have to be outlined to facilitate the creation of fuel linkages. Domestic supplies of primary fuels like coal, lignite, and other liquid fuels, would not be adequate for setting up the required capacity. There is a need to have an "import policy" for these fuels.

CONT

Major constraints for private sector projects is the lack of funding owing to poor financial condition of the state electricity boards; flux in privatisation policy of GOI [Government of India], particularly for fuel linkages and transportation; public sector projects feature protracted and contentious bidding procedures; all projects can face opposition by environmental and other pressure groups.

To sustain the launch load a launch support structure has been designed, which is released by dedicated electromechanical devices. Hexapod is controlled by a dedicated electronic unit... which interfaces to the Station via the MIL BUS 1553B.

The Plasma Contactor Unit discharges accumulated electrons(using a hollow cathode assembly that is provided as furnished equipment) from the International Space Station structure reducing the potential difference between the Station structure and the surrounding charged plasma environment. This reduction in potential eliminates arcing, thus preserving the exterior material properties of the space station structure. The electron discharge emission is facilitated by converting Xenon Gas to Plasma using thermionic electron emission and expelling the Xenon Plasma from the ORU [Orbital Replaceable Unit]. Each PCU holds enough Xenon to operate for two years minimum. The PCU contains the PCU Electronics Unit and Gas Feed System as major subassemblies.

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. A stuffed shield binds several kinds of textile layers similar to a bulletproof vest between itself and the wall. This is a reinforced Whipple shield.

The International Space Station will be covered by 200 different types of protection.

A pulley elbow is a device that contains a ball bearing sheave(pulley) which guides stainless steel cable 90 degrees around the sheave. It is defined as a device used to change direction for stainless steel wire cable, which is housed in conduit and is used to connect to a cable operated manual pull station, a mechanical gas valve, and/or the fusible link detection, from the Ansul AUTOMAN Regulated Release Mechanism. It is used because bending conduit results in too much friction loss in the movement of the cable in the conduit. There are two types of pulley elbows. Part No. 415670 has socket ends with set screws for ½ in. conduit, and Part No. 423250 has compression ring ends also for ½ in. conduit.
