Pyroclastic air fall deposits are a result of : ballistic transport of ejecta such as volcanic blocks, volcanic bombs and lapilli from volcanic explosions; deposition of material from convective clouds associated with pyroclastic flows such as coignimbrite falls; ejecta carried in gas streaming from a vent;... ejecta settling from an eruptive plume or eruption column that is displaced laterally by wind currents and is dispersed over great distances.

Les retombées pyroclastiques («pyroclastic air-fall deposits») se forment à proximité des volcans avec un granoclassement latéral (les éléments les plus grossiers se situant le plus près des centres d'émission) et une épaisseur variable, fonction de la distance au volcan. L'extension des dépôts pyroclastiques est largement dépendante du volume des ejecta et des caractéristiques des vents dominants. Chaque retombée peut être grossièrement granoclassée, avec les dépôts les plus fins au sommet.

OBS

Au contraire des dépôts de retombées, les dépôts issus des écoulements pyroclastiques sont canalisés dans les vallées; des retombées pyroclastiques qui proviennent de la décantation en pluie des particules volcanoclastiques depuis la colonne éruptive sous l'effet de la gravité. Les dépôts ont souvent une large répartition dont la surface dépend de l'intensité de l'éruption, du volume de matériaux émis et des conditions atmosphériques.
