GAS TRAP [15 records]

Record 1 2021-07-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
DEF

The impermeable rock overlying an oil or gas reservoir that tends to prevent migration of the reservoir fluids from the reservoir.

CONT

Oil and gas become trapped in the subsurface where there is a barrier formed by impermeable rocks, such as well-cemented lithologies, mudrock and evaporite beds. These impermeable lithologies are known as cap rocks. The hydrocarbons will find their way around the cap-rock barrier unless there is some form of hydrocarbon trap that prevents further upward migration.

OBS

All cap rocks are impermeable, therefore making the terms "impermeable cap rock" and "impervious cap rock" redundant.

Key term(s)
  • caprock

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
DEF

Key term(s)
  • roche-couverture
  • roche-couverture imperméable

Record 2 2017-07-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petroleum Deposits
DEF

An underground rock formation that blocks the movement of petroleum and causes it to accumulate in a reservoir that can be exploited.

CONT

The oil is accompanied always by water and often by natural gas; all are confined in a porous and permeable reservoir rock, which is usually composed of sedimentary rock... The natural gas, being lightest, occupies the top of the trap and is underlain by the oil and then the water.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gisements pétrolifères
CONT

Record 3 2011-03-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petroleum Deposits
  • Geology
DEF

An oil or gas trap resulting from lithologic variations.

CONT

Such changes ... cause a lateral decrease in porosity and permeability, and the more porous section of the layer may form a stratigraphic trap.

OBS

stratigraphic trap: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Key term(s)
  • stratigraphical trap
  • lithological trap

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gisements pétrolifères
  • Géologie
DEF

Record 4 2001-07-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plumbing
DEF

To furnish(a drain, etc.) with a trap or traps, to prevent the ascent of foul air or gas.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Plomberie
OBS

CONT

1. Whenever a building sewer serving a subterranean space conveys sanitary sewage to a public sewer, a trap shall be installed on the main sewer line outside the subterranean space. The purpose of the trap is to prevent odors or gas and/or pests from entering the subterranean space plumbing system from the public sewer. It is not to be used as a ventilating duct for public sewer. 2. A fresh-air inlet shall be connected on the upstream side of this trap so as not to interfere with the cleanouts therein.
