Silicone oil was first described as an intraocular tamponade for retinal detachment in 1962... Indications for the use of silicone oil tamponade include complex retinal detachments due to proliferative vitreoretinopathy(PVR), giant retinal tears, traumatic retinal detachments, and some cases of tractional retinal detachments(TRD). There are several advantages to using silicone oil over gas as a tamponade agent. Unlike gas, silicone oil remains in the eye until it is surgically removed and thus may be beneficial for inferior detachments or in patients who are unable to cooperate with postoperative positioning requirements... Additionally, silicone oil volume is unaffected by atmospheric pressure, so it may be used in patients who must undertake high altitude travel. 5, record 1, English, - silicone%20oil%20intraocular%20tamponade

Intraocular gas tamponade has become an integral part of macular hole surgery. It is thought to improve success rates of hole closure by providing a tamponade which either forces the healing hole against the retinal pigment epithelium or isolating the hole from liquefied vitreous humor. Various measures have been employed to lengthen the duration of contact between the healing macula and the tamponade agent, including(1) face-down posturing,(2) the use of longer-acting gases and(3) lens extraction to increase the volume of gas used. 1, record 2, English, - intraocular%20gas%20tamponade

Rock bursts. In areas of very deep mining, as additional weight is supported by the pillars on the coal face, stresses may so build up that the yield point is reached. If the coal pillars, the roof, or the floor are able to yield gradually, the effects of the stresses are relieved by floor heaving, or by pillar or roof failure. Where the coal or the associated rocks are particularly strong and depths are much above average, these stresses may be relieved by rock bursts, which are relatively violent outbursts of the coal into the rooms and entries. Frequently, a large volume of gas(usually methane) is suddenly released during a rock burst in a coal mine. 8, record 11, English, - rock%20burst
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 OBS
for "coal burst" : Rock bursts and "coal bursts" in coal mines are generally designated by the term "bumps" or "bounces". A large proportion of these "bumps" or "bounces" are actually "coal bursts" due to fracturing of pillars and remnants and need not involve any fracturing of roof or floor rock. 4, record 11, English, - rock%20burst
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 2 OBS
for "air blast" : In former years rock bursts were sometimes referred to as "air blasts". This name originated from the fact that large quantities of rock loosened by some of the larger rock bursts displaced quantities of air, with the result that a blast of air passed through the mine workings. 4, record 11, English, - rock%20burst

The key to the baking process is to achieve an adequate rate of gas production. This is done by careful regulation of the amounts of yeast, yeast substrate(fermentable sugars) and yeast nutrients(minerals required by yeast), and fermentation conditions, with equally careful regulation of chemical and physical actions and reactions(mixing conditions, oxidation and dough manipulation, for example) to bring the gluten into the physical state for optimum processing. In that state it will expand and hold sufficient gas to produce the loaf volume and crumb structure desired in the baked loaf. 1, record 32, English, - fermentable%20sugar

1, record 32, French, - sucre%20fermentescible

Though limited, groundwater is available in permafrost regions. Suprapermafrost water is water which stands on the surface of the ground in summer.... Intrapermafrost water is difficult to locate because it is locked with very few outlets into the permafrost. It is located in the same way that oil and gas are found, with seismic-prospecting instruments. Difficult to locate and generally sporadic, intrapermafrost water is normally too small in volume to satisfy the needs of large settlements. Subpermafrost water is the most dependable source of ground water in permafrost regions, since it never freezes and is kept fresh by the water-tight permafrost roof. It commonly emerges at ground level as springs. 1, record 33, English, - intrapermafrost%20water

In contrast to the automatic recording instruments monitoring volume increases at constant pressure, van de Craats maintained the volume constant and recorded automatically the pressure changes by means of an electromagnetic manometer devised by Kinkel.... In addition to van de Craats’ work with pressure-sensing devices, Novák and Janák constructed a detector which represents the pneumatic analog of a Wheatstone bridge, employing the dynamic effects of pneumatic obstructions such as capillaries and constrictions for determining component fractions emerging from the gas chromatographic column. Requiring no electrical power yet having an accuracy comparable to high precision thermal conductivity cells, it expresses the pressure differential, either differentially or integrally, caused by the eluted component as a diagonal from zero. Furthermore, the substance analyzed is never in contact with the detector. 1, record 41, English, - pressure%20detector

The PWN-12A is another sounding rocket using ... a dart with a ROBIN (Rocket Balloon Instrument) Inflatable Falling Sphere payload. At an apogee of about 115 km (70 miles), the dart releases a ... metalized mylar balloon ... While it is slowly descending back to earth, the balloon is tracked by a high-precision radar ... on the ground. Minimum tracking altitude is about 30 km (18 miles), where the ambient pressure will cause the balloon to collapse. Using the balloon’s known mass and volume, the radar track can be used to calculate atmospheric data like wind speed/direction and air density. 2, record 42, English, - ROBIN%20sphere

The other type of meteorological payload that can be used on a meteorological rocket consists of a falling ROBIN sphere that is used when probing the atmosphere to over 100 km altitude. These altitudes are above the normal operating levels for the thermistors aboard the rocketsonde.... This ROBIN sphere is a spherical shaped balloon constructed of a thin(0. 0001 mm thick) radar-reflective mylar material that is inflated with a small charge of inert gas to a known mass and volume. The dart containing the sphere typically reaches an altitude of 115 km where the sphere is deployed and inflated. When the sphere is inflated to super-pressure of approximately 10-12 mb, the sphere will reach a 1 meter(3. 3. ft) diameter. When the balloon descends to an altitude of approximately 30 km, the air pressure outside the sphere will become greater than that inside, causing the sphere to collapse. 1, record 42, English, - ROBIN%20sphere

Irradiation-induced swelling, also known as void swelling(VS), occurs in austenitic stainless steels and nickel-base alloys during neutron bombardment. Voids grow due to the migration and condensation of vacancies on the void nuclei(which can be gas bubbles) leading to an increase In material volume. This phenomenon is dependent on temperature, neutron flux, and neutron fluence. Swelling is typically a concern for fast reactors at temperatures above 350°C(662°F). 1, record 46, English, - irradiation%2Dinduced%20swelling

In this paper we consider the relative usefulness of taxes on SO2 emissions as instruments to reduce environmental damages caused by acid rain phenomena. The first enactment of revenue-sharing legislation was the inclusion of the Coastal Energy Impact Program(CEIP) in the Coastal Zone Management Act in 1976. The CEIP provided grants, loans, and loan guarantees to assist coastal states with costs of public services, infrastructure, and preventing or ameliorating the loss of valuable environmental or recreational resources caused by coastal and OCS oil and gas development. Allocation of funds under this program to individual states was based on the amount of OCS acreage leased for oil and gas development(50% weight), volume of oil and gas produced offshore each state(25% weight), and volume of oil and gas first landed in each state(25% weight). The Reagan administration stopped funding the CEIP and Congress repealed the program in 1990. 1, record 51, English, - Coastal%20Energy%20Impact%20Program

It is important to make a distinction between the vapor pressure of a liquid... and the pressure of a vapor. The vapor pressure of a pure liquid is a unique and characteristic property of the liquid and depends only upon the temperature. A gas or vapor may, on the other hand, exert any pressure within reason, depending upon the volume to which it is confined, provided it is not in contact with its liquid phase. 9, record 65, English, - vapor%20pressure

dry standard cubic meters(dscm) : Concentration of contaminants in gases emitted from sources(such as cement kilns) are generally expressed as a weight of that material per a volume of gas. Emissions from sources often contain water vapor from evaporation of water in the processed material or as water from combustion of hydrocarbons. This amount varies from source to source and at variable temperatures from source to source. To make an emission rate meaningful for comparison to another source or to a permit limit, the emission rate must be stated as a weight per(dry) gas at standard conditions. The specific standard conditions are set by the applicable authority, often a national laboratory group. 3, record 67, English, - dry%20standard%20cubic%20meter

A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range. 2, record 72, English, - colloid%20chemistry

The pressure allowed into the waste gas line is 275. 8 kPa(40 psia). The temperature of the exhaust waste gas is allowed to be be between 15. 6-45°C(60-113°F). The waste gas system can reach pressures of 1 x 10 [minus³] torr(1. 9 x 10minus 5 psia) in less than two hours for a single payload volume of 100 liters(3. 5 ft³) at an initial pressure of 101. 4 kPa(14. 7 psia). The maltose value of wheat flour is related to the behaviour of the flour in the breadmaking process. Doughs from flours with a low maltose value do not have enough fermentable sugars resulting in low gas production during fermentation. This can lead to low loaf volume, poor crumb texture and a pale crust. 1, record 88, English, - pale%20crust

A power burner in which gas is supplied at atmospheric pressure(zero gas) maintained by a zero governor. A fan, or blower, blows the air through a venturi, where venturi action pulls the gas into the airstream. The quantity of gas drawn into the airstream is a direct function of the air velocity, so the air-fuel ratio will remain constant regardless of the air volume. The firing rate is controlled by air adjustment alone. 1, record 95, English, - zero%2Dgovernor%20burner

A mechanical-draft burner which uses the energy of high-pressure gas(10 to 50 psi) to completely premix the air and gas. Gas is permitted to escape through a row of small orifices on the edge of propeller-like blades mounted on a free-spinning shaft. Reaction of the escaping gas rotates the blades, which are mechanically coupled to a fan that draws in the primary air. The speed of the fan varies with the gas pressure, thereby automatically adjusting the air volume to maintain optimum combustion. 1, record 98, English, - Fanmix%20burner
