GAS-LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY [9 records]

Record 1 2022-05-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biotechnology
CONT

[The method] was innovative in that it involved the concept of a stationary liquid (water) supported on an inert solid (silica), with the result that the solute molecules partitioned between the stationary liquid and a separate mobile liquid phase (chloroform). The technique came to be called partition chromatography.

OBS

The separation of a mixture occurs when a mobile phase(liquid or gas) passes over a stationary liquid phase which may be on paper, solid particles or the walls of a capillary tube. Partition processes include liquid-liquid, gas-liquid and paper chromatography.

CONT

DEF

A form of gas chromatography in which the moving phase is a gas and the stationary phase is a surface-active sorbent (charcoal, silica gel, or activated alumina). The separation is achieved by adsorption of the components of a sample.

OBS

The physical states of the mobile and stationary phases give rise to four basic types of chromatography :gas-liquid chromatography(GLC), gas-solid chromatography(GSC), liquid-liquid chromatography(LLC), and liquid-solid chromatography(LSC). Of the four basic types of chromatography, the two gas systems are independent and not subject to subdivisions. Thus the terms "gas-liquid chromatography" and "gas-solid chromatography" adequately identify the techniques involved. The liquid systems are not as easily described and are not mutually exclusive, which can lead to considerable confusion.

Domaine(s)

DEF

A form of gas chromatography in which the fixed phase(column packing) is a liquid solvent distributed on an inert solid support.

DEF

A liquid which is relatively nonvolatile at the column temperature and is sorbed on the solid support(employed in gas-liquid and liquid-liquid chromatography) where it acts as a solvent for the sample. The separation achieved differs with differences in solutility of the various components of the sample in the liquid phase.

OBS

Thin-film liquid stationary phases can be prepared for separation by liquid-liquid partition chromatography. The film, commonly water, is supported on materials such as silica gel or diatomaceous earth, as in column chromatography. Either silica gel or diatomaceous earth may be silanized to convert the surfaces to nonpolar methyl groups for reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography.

PHR

Nonpolar, polar liquid phase.

DEF

A systematic approach to pesticide identification developed by Suzuki uses column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography. Mass spectroscopy(MS) is also a powerful tool for the identification of compounds.... The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) had defined volatile priority pollutants as those amenable to analysis by the purge-and-trap method of sample preparation.... This method is generally applicable for substances with low water solubility and boiling points below 130 ° C.

CONT

The EPA method of screening for volatile compounds involves purging the sample with helium and trapping the volatilized organic compounds on a column of Tenax GC and silica gel at room temperature. The organic material is then thermally desorbed onto the gas chromatographic column. ... The purge-and-trap methods cited most often are those developed by Bellar and Lichtemberg although many similar techniques have been developed by other researchers.

OBS
