A form of gas chromatography in which the moving phase is a gas and the stationary phase is a surface-active sorbent (charcoal, silica gel, or activated alumina). The separation is achieved by adsorption of the components of a sample.

OBS

The physical states of the mobile and stationary phases give rise to four basic types of chromatography :gas-liquid chromatography(GLC), gas-solid chromatography(GSC), liquid-liquid chromatography(LLC), and liquid-solid chromatography(LSC). Of the four basic types of chromatography, the two gas systems are independent and not subject to subdivisions. Thus the terms "gas-liquid chromatography" and "gas-solid chromatography" adequately identify the techniques involved. The liquid systems are not as easily described and are not mutually exclusive, which can lead to considerable confusion.

In gas chromatography, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, or some other inert gas is employed as the mobile phase. With gas-solid chromatography, a stationary phase of an adsorptive solid, such as carbon, alumina, or silica, either is packed in the column as small particles or is coated on the inside wall as a film. Retention, in either case, is by weak adsorptive forces between the solute molecules and adsorptive sites on the solid material.

The mass transfer term is influenced by the partition coefficient and, therefore, by the relative solubility of the sample in the liquid phase(i. e, by the type and amount of liquid phase as well as the temperature). Or, in the case of gas-solid chromatography, it is influenced by the adsorbability of the solute on the solid phase.

Traditionally, in partition chromatography, the solid particles were deposited upon the liquid stationary phase ... this meaning must now be extended to include the inside surfaces of capillary columns.
