Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that uses an endoscopic suturing(stitching) device to reduce the stomach's size and volume by about 70%.... For the right candidate, ESG may be a less invasive alternative to laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Both procedures reduce the stomach size, but [laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy] does so by removing part of the stomach, while ESG uses stitches to bring folds of the stomach together like an accordion(similar to sewing a dart to tailor clothing).

Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery.... This surgery is also known as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy(VSG). Gastric sleeve surgery restricts your food intake, which leads to weight loss.... Most of the left part of the stomach is removed. The remaining stomach is then a narrow tube called a sleeve. Food empties out of the bottom of the stomach into the small intestine the same way that it did before surgery.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is a modification of the biliopancreatic diversion procedure... Biliopancreatic diversion is primarily a malabsorptive procedure. The standard procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach(a limited horizontal gastrectomy) to limit oral intake and induce weight loss.... The combination of biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is an additional adaptation of the standard procedure. It has a sleeve gastrectomy rather than a horizontal gastrectomy.

In a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, a portion of the stomach is removed but the pylorus remains intact. The pylorus, which controls food drainage from the stomach, is connected to a lower segment of the intestine. The duodenum is connected to the lower part of the small intestine. The food you eat then bypasses much of the small intestine. This results in fewer calories absorbed and weight loss.

Biliopancreatic diversion is primarily a malabsorptive procedure. The standard procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach(a limited horizontal gastrectomy) to limit oral intake and induce weight loss. The gastric pouch that is created is larger than that of gastric bypass or the restrictive procedures, therefore allowing larger meals, and patients remain on a less restricted diet than would the case following gastric bypass. Part of the small intestine is also bypassed by the construction of a long limb Roux-en-Y anastomosis with a short common "alimentary" channel of 50 cm length.
