Les objets d'apprentissage versés dans le dépôt ne peuvent remplacer ni les cours traditionnels ni les cours en ligne. Ils doivent plutôt être envisagés comme une ressource commune pour les personnes qui donnent des cours sur les mêmes thèmes, tout comme des ouvrages, des cartes, des diagrammes ou d'autres aides didactiques se veulent de nos jours les compléments des cours traditionnels ou à distance. Les professeurs qui se servent des objets d'apprentissage doivent les mettre en contexte. Il s'agira souvent d'objets particuliers qui sont donnés avec des exemples pertinents à l'appui. Ils doivent être présentés aux étudiants dans un contexte d'interprétation, de discussion et de réflexion.
