Gathering-arm loaders... are self propelled and may be mounted on rails, on crawlers, or on rubber tires. The crawler-mounted loader is the most commonly used. It is made up of three main components(a) the gathering head which is thrust into the coal and which is fitted with two rotating arms to sweep the coal onto the conveyor :(b) a chain conveyor which runs down the middle of the machine and carries the coal to the rear; and(c) the crawler chassis which carries a separate motor for each of the crawlers.

A continuous miner for operation in coal headings. The coal is completely augered by two banks of cutting arms fitted with picks and rotating at 52 r. p. m. The arms rotate in opposite directions to assist in gathering up the cuttings for the central conveyor. The cutting height is between 38 and 48 in. The crawler tracks provide a continuous thrust on the picks and a cutting rate of about 4 in./min. is possible.

C'est un châssis à chenilles portant à l'avant deux rangées de cinq éléments horizontaux dont la rotation désagrège le charbon [...]. Chaque élément porte un taillant avancé et une palette armée de dents, les unes centrales plus en avant et les autres périphériques en retrait. Deux éléments voisins tournent en sens inverse et la rangée inférieure est en avance sur la rangée supérieure. À la base, un racloir ramasse le charbon sur le mur. Il passe sous la partie frontale de l'appareil et est remonté par le convoyeur à raclettes.

Joy presently offers both the chain ripper miners and the rotary drum head-type miners introduced in 1968.... The rotary drum miner... sumps into the coal face at the top of the seam. When the predetermined sumping distance is reached, the head moves downwards breaking out the coal as it progresses. Gathering arms on the loader sweep the fallen coal from the floor on to the chain conveyor where it is carried through the throat of the machine to the rear end of the miner.
