White Pass and Yukon Railway, at 175 km long, was the steepest pitched railway in Canada. Work began in 1898, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, to provide transportation from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Building of the narrow gauge railway was an extremely difficult engineering feat, requiring extensive blasting, tunnels and precarious bridging. Thirty-five of the 35 000 men who worked on construction were killed. The summit of White Pass was reached in February 1899 and the "last spike" was driven at Carcross on 29 July 1900. The gold was exhausted by the time work was complete, though the line struggled along carrying passengers and freight. The mining boom in the Yukon revived the railway, as lead-zinc was hauled from Faro, Mayo and Clinton Creek. The shutdown of the WP&Y in 1982, as a result of the collapse of the mining boom, deprived Whitehorse of some employment and its sea rail link.

CONT

OBS

Wafer bow is one of the deformities that can cause a wafer to to lose dimensional integrity. This becomes very important with high-resolution photolithography(3 to 4 um line widths or less). A bow gauge is used, either as part of a complete wafer inspection system, or as an individual test piece. A bowed wafer is one whose cross section in one direction is concave or convex.

Although passenger railways have been in operation for more than a century and a half and have been incrementally improved, the modern high speed rail age can be said to date from 1964 with the opening of the New Tokaido line between Toyko and Osaka in Japan. This was an entirely new railway line, built to a different gauge than the rest of the Japanese National Railways, dedicated to passenger transportation only.

The connecting wires... are sometimes necessary to extend the circuit between the leg wires and the permanent firing line. These wires are usually of 20 gauge solid soft-drawn copper, or of 18 gauge three-quarter-hard electrical-grade aluminum, either single or duplex, with vinyl insulation, packaged on metal spools. Resistances for both types average 10. 3 ohms per 1000 ft(at 68 °F). These connecting wires are usually damaged or destroyed at each firing, and should be long enough to prevent damage to the permanent firing line(leading wires).
