[The authors] define modality as the distinct sensory channels or modes through which humans (or machines) perceive and interact with the external environment. It involves the recognition and interpretation of stimuli by specific sensory organs or technical sensors, which enable the detection and processing of sensory information. Stimuli represent the external events, patterns, or objects that trigger sensory experiences ... These stimuli activate the corresponding sensors, initiating the conversion of sensory information into digital or neural signals that are further processed in our nervous system or within the circuits of a computer. 2, record 1, English, - modality

Modality refers to how things are experienced in terms of sensory inputs as sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. There are devices like cameras, haptic sensors, microphones etc. which directly correspond to human senses for the computational world. There are devices like motion sensors, keyboards, and physiological sensors that are indirect. Some researchers define modality as how information is represented and communicated between people, such as gesture, speech, written language, gaze, etc. 3, record 1, English, - modality

The modes of interaction with systems are becoming evermore varied and sophisticated. Many of our research projects exploit the visual analysis of the end-user in order to improve human-machine interaction. The investigation of gaze and visual attention, the identification of movements, the tracking of facial muscular movements and the recognition of facial expressions are exploited to better comprehend the user's intention in order to supply it with a more user-friendly system. 3, record 2, English, - human%2Dcomputer%20interaction

Generally speaking, the RWO [real world object] insertion logic may insert a RWO at a location within the VRS [virtual reality scene] that corresponds to its location in the real world relative to the user's direction of gaze in real-time. As a result, the user sees the RWO within the augmented VRS as she would by taking off the HMD [head mounted display], providing her with spatial familiarity and reorientation cues without disrupting the flow of the VRS. Nevertheless, there may be certain instances where the insertion logic may place a RWO at a location within the VRS different than its location within the real world. The process of augmenting the VRS can continue progressively with the insertion or blending or overlaying of additional real world objects until the computer's DDL [disorientation detection logic] determines that the user no longer meets the criteria indicative of disorientation. 1, record 6, English, - insertion

Smart eyewear is defined as eyewear incorporating a near-to-eye display. As used herein, near-to-eye display means a display, device, or system, such as a retinal projector, virtual retinal display, visualization element, head-mounted display, heads-up display, or other near-to-eye system, typically worn on the head of a user that generates an image near the eye. In a smart eyewear configuration, a display device is often mounted adjacent to an edge of each of the wearer's eyes and an image is typically displayed in the center of each lens. The location of the displayed image, therefore, forces the wearer to gaze in a direction to view the image generated by the display. Typically positioned near the user's eye, the display is aligned to the central region of the user's field of view to allow review of the displayed information with little or no head movement. This enables the user to view the display while also viewing the area outside the central region and interacting with the surrounding environment. In another embodiment, the displayed image is aligned to a region other than the central region of the user's field of view. 5, record 8, English, - near%2Dto%2Deye%20display

Near-eye display devices are configured to present images to a user via a display that is positioned close to the user’s eyes. For example, a head-mounted augmented reality display device may be worn on a user’s head to position a near-eye display directly in front of a user’s eyes. A near-eye display may be at least partially see-through to allow a user to view a real-world background in combination with displayed virtual objects. This may allow virtual objects to be displayed such that the virtual objects appear to exist within the real-world environment. 6, record 8, English, - near%2Dto%2Deye%20display

HGN [horizontal gaze nystagmus] is an involuntary jerking of the eye that occurs naturally as the eyes gaze to the side. HGN is exacerbated by certain classes of drugs. During the HGN test, the eyes of an individual are observed as the individual follows a slowly moving object, such as a pen, horizontally with his or her eyes as it is moved from side to side. The officer separately observes the left and right eye for three signs : lack of smooth pursuit(present, absent) ;distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation(present, absent) ;and nystagmus onset before 45°(present, absent). 3, record 10, English, - horizontal%20gaze%20nystagmus%20test

Cervical flexion deformity(chin on chest deformity) is a complication of severe ankylosing spondylitis. This fixed posture of the cervical spine can cause significant difficulties with hygiene, nutrition, and forward gaze. Patients experience inability to open their mouth wide enough to maintain adequate nutrition, hygiene problems such as skin ulcers on the chin or chest, and problems with forward gaze leading to difficulties with ambulation. Psychosocial aspects of this deformity are also considerable. Surgical intervention includes posterior C[ cervical] 7–T[ thoracic] 1 extension osteotomy/fusion with sterile midprocedure halo placement. This procedure involves significant manipulation of the cervical spine, with possible catastrophic consequences. 2, record 22, English, - cervical%20flexion%20deformity
