When was Sport England(previously known as the English Sports Council) established? The English Sports Council began operating under Royal Charter in January 1997. Before then, responsibility for the development of sport in England lay with the GB Sports Council... While the Sports Councils for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland remained virtually unchanged, another new organisation-the UK Sports Council(now known as UK Sport)-took responsibility for issues that need to be dealt with at UK level.

Their role was to allocate and administer Government funds in sport... In January 1997 the GB Sports Council was effectively split into two sections to form a United Kingdom Sports Council and an English Sports Council.
