The world's terrestrial ecosystems are being subjected to changing environmental conditions of an unprecedented scale, both in their rate and in their geographical extent. The ability of human societies to ameliorate, adapt to, and benefit from these rapid changes requires fundamental knowledge of the responses of terrestrial ecosystems to the forces of global change.
