The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys’ respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. It varies these parameters at any time, at any engine or vehicle speed. 4, record 9, English, - continuously%20variable%20transmission

7, record 9, French, - transmission%20%C3%A0%20variation%20continue

The "gear" of a bicycle relates to the mechanical advantage of the whole drive system. In a low gear, the pedals are easy to turn, but you don’t have to spin very fast to get any speed up. In a high gear, the pedals are hard to turn, but you have to spin very fast to get any speed up. In a high gear, the pedals are hard to turn, but you don’t have to make them turn very fast to make the bicycle go fast... The gear of a bicycle depends on the ratio between the sizes of front and rear sprockets, and the size of the drive wheel. 3, record 12, English, - gear

A universal joint is a positive, mechanical connection between rotating shafts, which are usually not parallel, but intersecting. They are used to transmit motion, power, or both. The simplest and most common type is called the Cardan joint or Hooke joint... It consists of two yokes, one on each shaft, connected by a cross-shaped intermediate member called the spider. The angle between the two shafts is called the operating angle. It is generally, but not necessarily, constant during operation. Good design practice calls for low operating angles, often less than 25°, depending on the application. Independent of this guideline, mechanical interference in the construction of Cardan joints limits the operating angle to a maximum (often about 37½°, depending on its proportions. 3, record 18, English, - Hooke%20joint

Gyroscopic pendulum. Free pendulum. The gyro spinning wheel is running at constant speed. The precession drive, which lies in a plane symmetric with respect to the gimbal is not controlled. When the gimbal becomes free, the gravity torque drives it around the horizontal axis, perpendicular to the symmetry plane, until it falls on the top. With a part-time/full-time system, users expect to employ four-wheel drive on the highway. But accepted practice held that a planetary or bevel gear differential was needed to prevent generation of wind-up torques on a dry road. Designs without mechanical differentials have long been known to cause particular problems during tight turns and parallel parking, when wheels on one side of the vehicle travel a different distance than wheels on the other side. Forcing all four wheels to operate in synchronization during such maneuvers causes drive-line wind-up. 1, record 31, English, - planetary%20gear%20differential

Automotive engineers could imagine, for instance, constructing an electrorheological clutch. The fluid inside this clutch would couple a car's engine to its drive shaft, which delivers power to the wheels. When solidified, the fluid would force the drive shaft to rotate. As it liquifies, the fluid would allow the engine to disengage from the drive shaft and spin freely, as if in neutral gear. Such a clutch would have few parts to wear or fail. And with a response time of a few milliseconds, it would make purely mechanical clutches look slow. It was also hoped that electrorheological fluids would lead to valveless hydraulic systems, in which solidifying fluid would shut off flow through a thin section of pipe. 1, record 34, English, - electrorheological%20clutch

1, record 34, French, - embrayage%20%C3%A9lectrorh%C3%A9ologique

Most pitch-changing mechanisms are operated by oil pressure(hydraulically) and use some type of piston-and-cylinder arrangement. The piston may move in the cylinder, or the cylinder may move over a stationary piston. The linear motion of the piston is converted by several different types of mechanical linkage into the rotary motion necessary to change the blade angle. The mechanical connection may be through gears, the pitch-changing mechanism turning a drive gear or power gear that meshes with a gear attached to the butt of each blade. 3, record 45, English, - pitch%2Dchange%20mechanism
