The Fowler flap and others with similar operation are designed to increase substantially the wing area as the flap is extended. When retracted, the flap forms the trailing edge of the wing. As this type of flap is extended, it is moved rearward, often by means of a worm gear, and is supported in the correct position by means of curved tracks. The effect of the Fowler flap, when extended, is to greatly reduce the stalling speed of the aircraft by the increase in wing area and change in wing camber.

Le volet Fowler est encastré dans la partie arrière de l'intrados de l'aile. Lorsqu'il est braqué, il accroît la courbure et la surface de l'aile. En même temps, il se trouve légèrement décalé par rapport à l'aile elle-même, d'où la création d'une fente qui améliore l'écoulement. Le braquage d'un volet Fowler permet de multiplier par 2 et au-delà le coefficient de portance maximal de l'aile.

Dynamic tests are specifically concerned with landing gear performance and CEAT has four specialized machines for this purpose. The landing gear is attached to an adjustable ’load’ platform running in vertical guides. Landing impact is simulated by dropping this assembly at a controlled speed on to a rotating drum which provides the effect of movement over the ground. The largest of these four machines, developed and built at CEAT, permits dynamic tests to be carried out on the main landing gear of aircraft with a landing weight in excess of 120 tonnes.

A petty officer, responsible directly to the chief officer, whose duties include the opening and battening down of hatches and cargo ports; the sounding at regular intervals of the double-bottom and other tanks; the handling and upkeep of anchors and cables, wooden masts, and cargo booms; and the maintenance of wooden decks.
