GEAR IMPACT [10 records]

Record 1 2023-03-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

While preventing loss is preferable for reducing the impacts of ghost fishing and marine debris, gear adaptations can minimize the impact of ghost fishing by reducing the possibility of the gear to continually fish. Biodegradable nets, traps, and pots... can reduce ghost fishing.... The... crab fishery... uses cotton escape cord, which decomposes and releases the plastic hooks an average of 126 days after deployment... Escape cords are mandatory in the fishery, but the regulation does not specify the diameter.

DEF

The catching of fish or shellfish that are found on or close to the seabed, using any gear type likely to come in contact with the seafloor or benthic organisms during the normal course of operations.

CONT

Since gear impacts are affected by such factors such as the type of benthic communities over which they are fished, restricting bottom fishing from specific areas would reduce impact on particularly sensitive areas.... the policy for managing the impacts of fishing on sensitive benthic areas... can be used to protect ocean-floor habitat.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
  • Environmental Management
CONT

The total mortality rate estimated from the lengths in the scientific surveys, the number of fishing days of a fleet per season, the percentage of immature individuals as well as the amount of gear per fishing area are indicators of fishing pressure on a population. For example, a mean total mortality rate estimated during a period when fishing would not have had an impact on the health of the population can serve as a target reference point. Recommendations aimed at reducing the level of withdrawal can then be issued when this target reference is exceeded.

Domaine(s)
  • Collaboration avec la FAO
  • Pêche commerciale
  • Gestion environnementale
CONT

[A technique used] for fish harvesting [in which] a large net, [held open by two large boards attached to its sides,] is dragged along the bottom or up in the water column behind a towing vessel.

CONT

The effects of repetitive otter trawling on a gravel bottom ecosystem were evaluated... It is one of very few multi-year otter trawling impact experiments conducted on gravel seabeds, a habitat type that is generally regarded to be particularly vulnerable to bottom fishing gear.

... one of the ways to achieve a smooth touchdown is to come over the runway at a higher speed and float for some distance before letting the landing gear touch down on the runway. This reduces the G force on impact.

In the early years, harnesses were made of a simple parachutist harness, possibly with a wooden board to make the flight easier on the legs, but now safety measures such as back-protectors made of thick impact absorbing foam are commonplace. Like helmets or other protective gear, there are limits to the strength of impact that can safely be absorbed by a foam back protector in a paragliding harness.

CONT

The Gingo is equipped with an optional GINSOFT II soft back protector with 17 cm thickness. … The GINSOFT II back protection is DHV certified and free compatible, which means it can be used with any harness with a large enough container for the back protection. The GINSOFT II protector is the lightest soft foam protector with DHV certification.

CONT

Dynamic tests are specifically concerned with landing gear performance and CEAT has four specialized machines for this purpose. The landing gear is attached to an adjustable ’load’ platform running in vertical guides. Landing impact is simulated by dropping this assembly at a controlled speed on to a rotating drum which provides the effect of movement over the ground. The largest of these four machines, developed and built at CEAT, permits dynamic tests to be carried out on the main landing gear of aircraft with a landing weight in excess of 120 tonnes.

The single leaf cantilever spring steel type of main landing gear is used extensively on Cessna airplanes. The gear consists of a single strap of Chrome Vanadium Steel bent to form the shape of the complete undercarriage structure. It is attached to the fuselage in a cradle bulkhead by bolts. It is capable of storing energy in initial impact, thereby producing quite low load factors. Low maintenance, simplicity and long service life characterize this gear type.
