The flywheel is painted red, and revolves with the engine crankshaft. The governor weight is inside the flywheel, and is painted yellow. As the speed increases, the weight rotates outward. Movement of the weight is resisted by the spring attached to the weight and the flywheel. Movement of the weight shifts the position of the eccentric, seen behind the flywheel, painted red. Shifting the position of the eccentric changes the amount of steam the valve gear admits to the engine.

The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys’ respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. It varies these parameters at any time, at any engine or vehicle speed.

The Fowler flap and others with similar operation are designed to increase substantially the wing area as the flap is extended. When retracted, the flap forms the trailing edge of the wing. The Cup Counter Anemometer gives direct indication of run of wind on a mechanical counter.... Munro Cup Counter Anemometer... is used at many agrometeorological stations in hot climates to indicate the run of wind at 2 m above ground level and for estimating potential evapotranspiration. Gyroscopic pendulum. Free pendulum. The gyro spinning wheel is running at constant speed. The precession drive, which lies in a plane symmetric with respect to the gimbal is not controlled. When the gimbal becomes free, the gravity torque drives it around the horizontal axis, perpendicular to the symmetry plane, until it falls on the top. This rate of rotation of the gimbal creates a gyroscopic torque that makes the spinner rotate around the precession axis in spite of the friction due to the gear of the precession drive.

Timken lubricant test. The Timken test determines the load at which a film of lubricant will fail and cause scoring. The test consists of a revolving test cup(race) that rubs on a stationary block.
