Detergent solubilization has been used with great success to study the major proteins in various membranes. Typically, the membranes are first heated to 100°C in a 1% solution of the strong detergent SDS(which disrupts all non-covalent protein-protein and protein-lipid interactions and completely unfolds the proteins), then layered on top of a polyacrylamide gel containing SDS, and lastly subjected to electrophoresis in a strong electric field for several hours. The amount of anionic SDS bound to protein is roughly equal to the mass of the polypeptide, with the result that the negative charge of the detergent overwhelms the intrinsic charge of the protein. Consequently, each individual protein migrates in the electric field at a rate determined by its molecular weight. 4, record 2, English, - sodium%20dodecyl%20sulphate

4, record 2, French, - dod%C3%A9cyl%20sulfate%20de%20sodium

Effect of bacterial exopolysaccharide xanthan on the wheat protein properties. Abstract : Exopolysaccharide xanthan has been studied for its effect on protein substances of dough and gluten isolated from meal of different wheat varieties. It is shown do strengthening of gluten removed from the dough to which was added xanthan(0. 1-. 50% of meal weight) is determined by the decrease of gluten protein solubility in 0. 05 M acetic acid solution and 12% sodium salicilate solution. Gel chromatographic analyses of proteins has shown that xanthan addition to dough results in the changes of their fractional composition and molecular weight of definite fractions, in the increasing of molecular weight values of both glutenin and glyadine fractions. 1, record 3, English, - glyadine

The prerequisite for glasses and glass-ceramics to bond to living bone is the formation of biologically active bonelike apatite on their surfaces in the body. Our previous study showed that a silica gel prepared by a hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane in aqueous solution containing poly(ethylene glycol) induces apatite nucleation on its surface in a simulated body fluid. In the present study, the effects of heat treatment of silica gel on its catalytic effects in apatite nucleation was investigated in a simulated body fluid. It was found that apatite forms on the surfaces of silica gels heat-treated below 800 C, but not on those heat-treated above 900 C. The volume of nanometer-range pores in the gel remarkably decreased by heat treatment above 900 C. The concentration of silanol groups in the silica gels gradually decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature. The rate of silica dissolution from the gel into the simulated body fluid decreased remarkably by heat treatment above 900 C. This suggested that a special type of silanol group which is formed by soaking the gel treated below 800 C into the simulated body fluid is responsible for apatite nucleation. 3, record 4, English, - simulated%20body%20fluid

Gel spinning is a special process used to obtain high strength or other special fiber properties. The polymer is not in a true liquid state during extrusion. Not completely separated, as they would be in a true solution, the polymer chains are bound together at various points in liquid crystal form. This produces strong inter-chain forces in the resulting filaments that can significantly increase the tensile strength of the fibers. In addition, the liquid crystals are aligned along the fiber axis by the shear forces during extrusion. The filaments emerge with an unusually high degree of orientation relative to each other, further enhancing strength. 1, record 7, English, - gel%20spinning
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The process can also be described as dry-wet spinning, since the filaments first pass through air and then are cooled further in a liquid bath. Some high-strength polyethylene and aramid fibers are produced by gel spinning. 1, record 7, English, - gel%20spinning

In the preparation of teeth for conventional dental composite bonded restorations, pit and fissure sealants, cementation of prosthetic restorations, porcelain veneers, and bonding of orthodontic appliances, it is necessary to prepare the desired tooth surface. The standard method is a technique whereby the cleaned and dried tooth surface is treated with an acidic etchant solution or gel. Application of the etchant for a short period of time(approximately one minute) on the tooth surface to be treated, followed by a thorough water rinse and air drying, produces a selective dissolution of the tooth surface to promote an effective bond with the subsequently applied restorative bonding agent or materials. The acid removes calcium salts which increases the size and number of the microspaces. The bonding agent fills these "tags" and is then polymerized to produce the mechanical interlocking of resin to tooth. 1, record 8, English, - etchant%20solution

The gel entrapment method involves entrapping of the enzymes within the interstitial spaces of crosslinked water insoluble polymer gels.... The usual method of gel formation is to polymerize acrylamide in an aqueous solution of the soluble enzyme and a crosslinking agent such as N, N-methylenebis(acrylamide). The resulting gel block can be mechanically dispersed into particles of desired size. The broad distribution of pore size of the gel inevitably results in leakage of the entrapped enzyme even after prolonged washing whilst the generation of free radicals in the course of the reaction may affect the activity of the entrapped enzymes. 1, record 16, English, - gel%20entrapment

1, record 16, French, - inclusion%20dans%20un%20gel

To cast a gel, a lower fixed plate... is laid on the casting table [of the LKB Macromould Gel Casting Unit] with spacers of desired thickness clamped along the edge. A notched glass plate is placed so that it rests on the support and overlaps the lower plate by 2 to 3 cm. In one continuous movement, the gel solution is poured into the notch at the same time as the upper plate is pushed over the lower one. The solution fills the gap between the plates by capillary action.... 1, record 17, English, - gel%20casting
