Differential Display(DD)... and a conceptually similar technique, arbitrarily primed PCR fingerprinting of RNA(APPCR) 19, both PCR amplify subsets of an mRNA population and separate the resulting cDNAs by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Since the introduction of DD in 1992, over 100 reports regarding improvements and/or successful applications have been published. Although DD has the appearance of being technically easy, the road from "band on the gel" to a positive can be treacherous as outlined in a recent commentary. The primary criticisms are(1) a high false positive rate,(2) questioned ability of DD to identify both abundant and rare mRNAs,(3) coding regions of mRNAs are usually not cloned, and(4) verification process is time consuming and usually requires a fair amount of RNA.

Where iron particles are present in the soil or the water, they can... be the source of another potential hazard... Oxidation and other chemical reactions can change the size of the ferruginous particles with time, giving rise to unexpected clogging of the geotextile... A... rare form of ferric clogging due to the presence of certain bacteria in geotextile-wrapped drains, has been reported... These bacteria may be subdivided into two groups, one of which oxidizes dissolved iron in the drain water to form a precipitate, and the other of which acts on dissolved organic matter in the drain water, to release iron which may then be oxidized. The result of this bacterial activity is a deposit of bacterial gel containing rusty layers in the drain core.

Colmatage chimique.

Electroblotting has been a feature of a large number of laboratories for a(relatively) long time now, and there are a large number of different apparati around that will efficiently transfer proteins(or other macromolecules) transversely from gel to membrane. Most of these, however, are based on the design of Towbin et al.(1979) : ie., they have vertical carbon/stainless steel/platinum electrodes in a large tank.

OBS

electroblotting uses an electric field to pull the molecule out of the gel.

In the preparation of teeth for conventional dental composite bonded restorations, pit and fissure sealants, cementation of prosthetic restorations, porcelain veneers, and bonding of orthodontic appliances, it is necessary to prepare the desired tooth surface. The standard method is a technique whereby the cleaned and dried tooth surface is treated with an acidic etchant solution or gel. Application of the etchant for a short period of time(approximately one minute) on the tooth surface to be treated, followed by a thorough water rinse and air drying, produces a selective dissolution of the tooth surface to promote an effective bond with the subsequently applied restorative bonding agent or materials. The acid removes calcium salts which increases the size and number of the microspaces. The bonding agent fills these "tags" and is then polymerized to produce the mechanical interlocking of resin to tooth.

One current proteomic tool for visualizing and quantitating all proteins expressed in a ological system at a given time is two-dimensional gel electrophoresis(2-DGE). As originally described by Patrick O’Farrell for analyzing Escherichia coli proteins in 1975, 2-DGE combines the electrophoretic separation of denatured proteins bysoelectric point charge differences in the first dimension with separation based on molecular size differences in the second dimension. The proteins, which can be detected using protein-specific stains, appear as constellations of spots in the 2-D space of the gel. Over the 20-year history of 2-DGE, numerous algorithms have been developed for comparing 2-DGE patterns and quantitatively analyzing protein abundance.
