OBS

To address how different groups have different lived experiences, more detailed data is needed, which can be broken down, or disaggregated, into subcategories according to gender, ethnocultural characteristics, age, sexual orientation, disability—or intersections of these and other subcategories. Data also needs to be broken down to the lowest possible level of geography, since events impact people differently depending on where they geographically live. To produce this detailed disaggregated data, the Disaggregated Data Action Plan(DDAP) was launched... A whole-of-government approach led by Statistics Canada, DDAP aims to increase and improve statistics on diverse populations, and to support more representative data collection methods.

OBS

Gender needs. The roles of men and women in existing societies and institutions are generally different. Thus, their needs vary accordingly. Two types of needs are usually identified practical needs and strategic needs. Practical needs arise from the actual conditions which women and men experience because of the gender roles assigned to them in society. Strategic needs are the needs required to overcome the subordinate position of women to men in society, and relate to the empowerment of women. They vary according to the particular social, economic, and political context in which they are formulated.

Gender-responsive standards are standards which acknowledge the distinct needs of different genders and take concerted action to ensure the efficacy of the standard for all. A gender-responsive standard is not a separate standard for different genders, but rather a means of ensuring the impact of the standard is appropriate and provides equitable benefit. Gender equity and balanced representation in the process of standards development is crucial to better respond to the priorities of all genders, ensuring that they are gender-responsive.

OBS

Gender-responsive standards encompass both sex and gender.

DEF

The concept that both men and women are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles and prejudices, and that the different behaviours, aspirations and needs of men and women are considered, valued and favoured equally.

OBS

Gender equality does not mean that men and women have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities do not depend on the sex they were assigned at birth.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sociologie des relations humaines
  • Droits et libertés
DEF

The Anti-Poverty Approach. Anti-poverty is the second WID [Women in Development] approach, the "tone down" version of equity, introduced from the 1970s onwards. Its purpose is to ensure that poor women increase their productivity. Women's poverty is seen as the problem of underdevelopment, not of subordination. It recognizes the productive role of women, and seeks to meet practical gender needs to earn an income, particularly through small-scale income-generating projects. The Equity Approach. Equity is the original "WID" [women in development] approach, introduced within the 1976-85 UN [United Nations] Women's Decade. Its purpose is to gain equity for women in the development process. Women are seen as active participants in development. It recognizes women's triple role and seeks to meet strategic gender needs through direct state intervention, giving political and economic autonomy to women, and reducing inequality with men. Efficiency is the third and now predominant WID [Women in development] approach, particularly since the 1980s debt crisis. Its purpose is to ensure that development is more efficient and effective through women's economic contribution. Women's participation is equated with equity for women. It seeks to meet practical gender needs while relying on all of women's three roles and an elastic concept of women's time. Women are seen primarily in terms of their capacity to compensate for declining social services by extending their working day.
