Soroptimist is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Approximately 76,000 Soroptimists in over 120 countries and territories support community-based and global projects benefiting women and girls. The organization is particularly concerned with providing women and girls access to education, as this is the most effective path to self-determination. The name, Soroptimist, means "best for women," and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. To support the Gender Equality Initiative and help co-ordinate work related to gender equality across the Department, the office of the Senior Advisor has begun a program to broaden Department-wide expertise and understanding of gender equality analysis, through education and the development of analytical approaches. The Advisor is supported by a network of over 50 gender equality specialists who ensure the application of gender equality analysis in their fields. The Advisor also benefits from the contribution of the Advisory Committee on Gender Equality on issues relating to raising awareness in the Department regarding gender equality. The new Policy of the Department of Justice on Gender Equality Analysis was released in June, 1997. Pour soutenir l'Initiative d'égalité des sexes et aider à coordonner le travail relatif à l'égalité des sexes dans tout le Ministère, le bureau de la conseillère principale met en application un programme qui vise à élargir l'expertise et la compréhension de l'analyse axée sur l'égalité des sexes dans tout le Ministère, par l'éducation et l'élaboration de démarches analytiques. La conseillère est appuyée par un réseau de plus de 50 spécialistes de l'égalité des sexes qui voient à l'application dans leur domaine de l'analyse axée sur l'égalité des sexes. Elle peut aussi compter sur l'apport du Comité consultatif sur l'égalité des sexes pour la sensibilisation du personnel du Ministère à cette question. En juin 1997, on a publié la nouvelle Politique du ministère de la Justice sur l'analyse visant l'égalité des sexes.
