GENE POOL [11 records]

Record 1 2020-08-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
  • Ecology (General)
DEF

A population of organisms which, sharing a common gene pool, is sufficiently discrete to warrant consideration as a self-perpetuating system which can be managed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
  • Écologie (Généralités)
DEF

Record 2 2017-02-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
DEF

[The science that studies and implements] the methods of improving the [genetic] qualities of the human species or a human population, especially by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inherited undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics).

OBS

The belief that genetic factors could explain traits such as intelligence, criminal tendencies and athletic prowess gave rise to the eugenics movement, which aimed to improve the human race by reshaping its gene pool. In the United States the eugenics movement played a role in public policies on immigration, interracial marriage and the mandatory sterilization of so-called defectives.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
DEF

Record 3 2015-12-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

Two decades of culture-independent studies have confirmed that microbial communities represent the most complex and concentrated pool of phylogenetic diversity on the planet. There remains a need for innovative molecular tools that can further our knowledge of microbial diversity and its functional implications. We present the method and application of serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags(SARST) as a novel tool for elucidating complex microbial communities, such as those found in soils and sediments. Serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags uses a series of enzymatic reactions to amplify and ligate ribosomal sequence tags(RSTs) from bacterial small subunit rRNA gene(SSU rDNA) V1-regions into concatemers that are cloned and sequenced.

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
CONT
