A real difference in pathogenicity between HIV-1 and HIV-2 could be significant, and it would be important to determine its molecular basis. The two viruses infect the same populations of cells, binding the same CD4 receptor, but there are some differences in their genetic material and therefore in proteins. One of the most obvious is the presence in HIV-1 of the vpu gene, which is absent in HIV-(and in SIV, for that matter). Perhaps the product of this gene, a small 16-kilodalton peptide, enpathogenicity. Similarly, HIV-2 and SIV contain the vpx gene; HIV-1 does not. If this gene's 12-kilodalton product somehow slows the proliferation or spread of the virus or reduces its ability cells, that too could help to explain why HIV-2 and SIV appear to be less regularly pathogenic than HIV-1. 1, record 11, English, - vpx%20gene

The cloned double-stranded DNA is denatured and annealed to a mixture of mRNAs known to contain mRNA [messenger RNA] : DNA hybrids are formed, which renders the relevant mRNA unavailable for translation. Gene characterization, What does it mean to characterize a gene at the molecular level? There is no strict definition, but at the minimum it means to define that region of a chromosome, or a transcribed product, that is necessary to encode a specific product or function. What is Post-Genomics Biology? In this era of whole-genome sequencing, the questions are changing-the driving force is no longer to clone and sequence genes in the random fashion that was available before, but rather to use the wealth of information available from the sequencing projects to understand gene function and gene product interactions at the physiological level. Do homologous proteins have homologous functions in different organisms? How do we use information from a 'simple’ organism to focus research in more complex ones? What do all these genes do that have not been seen using traditional methods? How can we understand the different roles of members of gene families which are only now appearing as a result of the genome sequencing projects? 1, record 21, English, - post%2Dgenomics%20biology

A very original set of experiments carried out by the Unit of Molecular Biology of Gene Expression concerns another protein essential for mouse development that is also a transcription factor. This factor known as KBF2 or RBP-Jk is homologous to a Drosophila gene product, Su(H)(Suppressor of Hairless), which belongs to the Notch signal transduction cascade involved in regulating the competence of a cell to respond to specific developmental cues. A likely function of the Su(H) protein is to serve as an anchor on DNA for non DNA-binding transcriptional activators. This function is conserved in the Notch pathway : the activation of this transmembrane receptor likely involves a proteolytic cleavage step which releases its intracellular domain; following nuclear translocation, it activates its target genes by binding to the Su(H) protein, which is already bound to several sites in the target promoters. 2, record 24, English, - Su%28H%29%20protein

Processes whereby industrial enzymes are manufactured. Some enzymes are formed at all times (constitutive enzymes), whereas others are only formed when needed (inducible enzymes). Few enzymes are produced by wild-type organisms in the quantities required for a viable commercial operation. Enzymes may be produced by extraction of very small amounts from very large quantities of cells or tissues, making them suitable for medical, diagnostic, analytical or research purposes. 1, record 27, English, - enzyme%20production

Methods are available to overcome the control mechanisms that exert an inhibitory effect on the production of large amounts of enzymes by microorganisms. These techniques are divided into two categories :(1) manipulation of the genetics(use of mutagens and selection, or more recently gene manipulation) in order to alter the regulation mechanisms or produce more copies of the gene responsible;(2) manipulation of the environment(addition of inducers, or removal or avoidance of end product repressors). This can be done using a mixed culture, the second organism removing the end product that represses the first. 1, record 27, English, - enzyme%20production
