A key notion in the Newell-Simon scheme is the production system, in which an operation will be carried out if a certain specific condition is met. Programs consist of long sequences of such production systems operating on the data base. As described by the theorists, the production system is kind of a computational stimulus-response link; so long as the stimuli (or conditions) are appropriate, the response (or production) will be executed. In the course of developing the General Problem Solver, Simon and Newell have propounded a perspective on artificial intelligence, a theory of thinking, and an agenda for future research. 5, record 5, English, - production%20system

Defamation can be divided into the two broad categories of libel and slander. The former has basically been associated with the written word but also extends to pictures, statues, films and even conduct implying a defamatory meaning. It is actionable without proof of damage, as general damages are presumed. It may even be the subject of a criminal prosecution. Slander, on the other hand, is generally conveyed by the spoken word and is not actionable per se, so that, no matter how offensive the language used is, an action lies only if special damages are pleaded and proved subject to certain exceptions. 1, record 9, English, - conduct%20implying%20a%20defamatory%20meaning

The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor(ABWR) is an improved design of [a] boiling water reactor. The ABWR was designed by General Electric as their generation III reactor. One chief improvement is that the recirculation pumps and piping are contained inside the reactor pressure vessel, thus making it impossible for them to leak outside of the vessel. Also, in the event of a loss of coolant accident(LOCA), plant response has been fully automated and operator action is not required for 3 days. These and other improvements make the plant significantly safer than previous reactors. 2, record 11, English, - advanced%20boiling%20water%20reactor

The liability of occupiers hinges on the inveterate distinction... between activities creating risks of harm and the failure to take affirmative action to prevent harm.... the common law... was generally cool to the plea that anyone should be obliged to exert himself on behalf of another, at least in the absence of some corresponding benefit. This factor goes far to explain the erstwhile reluctance to expose occupiers to the discipline of a general duty of care....(However) the mere fact that the defendant happens to be an occupier does not mean his duties are necessarily and exclusively defined by his "occupancy" duties : they may well be augmented by a general duty of care as the result of some additional factor colouring his relationship to the plaintiff... 1, record 12, English, - general%20duty%20of%20care

Though it may seem unidiomatic to make litigation a count noun(hence a plural), the usage is old and is today common. "E. g. ", "[The] first and second parties now have certain litigations pending in the Mercer Circuit Court. "... "a single automobile litigation... consumed sixty-three trial days". "The firm engages in general civil practice with emphasis on business litigations". "No court in which a litigation to that end might be brought... This word is best not used, however, as an equivalent of action or suit :"Whether such claims are just need not be decided to determine the rights of the parties to this litigation [read suit]". Properly, litigation=the action or process of carrying on a suit in law or equity("OED") ;thus it does not refer to the suit itself, but to the maintenance of it. Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]". 3, record 19, English, - litigation

This category of mistake is derived from a small group of cases most of them of modern times, although the doctrine existed at least as early as 1584. The general rule is that a man is estopped by his deed, and although there is no such estoppel in the case of ordinary signed documents, a party of full age and understanding is normally bound by his signature to a document, whether he reads or understands it or not. If, however, a party has been misled into executing a deed or signing a document essentially different from that which he intended to execute or sign, he can plead non est factum in an action against him. The deed or writing is completely void in whosesoever hands it may come. 1, record 20, English, - plead%20non%20est%20factum

The concept of limitation must be contrasted with the concept of prescription. The former was unknown to the common law and is wholly a creature of statute. The latter was a common law rule of evidence based on the presumption of lost modern grant. The former abolishes stale or obsolete claims and operates in a negative fashion. The latter creates or establishes rights in land such as easements and operates in a positive fashion. (Anger & Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, p. 1496). 1, record 23, English, - limitation
Record number: 23, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Statutes of Limitation are generally regarded as a means of protecting the defendant against a stale or unjust claim. Except in actions chiefly concerned with real property, in which, by the judicial interpretation of the limitation provisions applicable thereto, it has been held that the lapse of the statutory period operates to extinguish the right, "The Limitations Act" operates merely as a bar to the remedy by proceedings in the courts. Except where the statute by its terms absolutely extinguishes the debt or demand itself, the general rule with respect to debts, or more money demands is that statutes of limitation are regarded as barring the remedy, and not as extinguishing the cause of action.("C. poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. 3, record 28, English, - poach
Record number: 28, Textual support number: 2 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 3, record 28, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position ... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate ... The poaching shot is usually down the sidelines, wide of the opposing net guard. 2, record 28, English, - poach

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 30, English, - shot

Study of the rate at which a reaction proceeds and of the reaction mechanism, the intermediate steps constituting the overall reaction. The reaction rate is the rate of change of the concentrations of a reactant or product expressed in moles per liter per second (mol/1-sec.). It varies with temperature, and the presence (or absence) of catalyst, and the concentration of one or more products or other molecular species. When these conditions are fixed, it is equal to the rate constant for the reaction multiplied by the product of the concentration of the reactants, with each concentration raised to a specific power. 1, record 35, English, - kinetics

Further, sexism in any form will not be tolerated. While the primary focus of the committee's activities may be on men and issues particular to men, meetings are open to all. 1, record 44, French, - Le%20comit%C3%A9%20de%20soutien%20%C3%A0%20l%27action%20des%20hommes

One trained and licensed to prepare, manage, and either prosecute or defend a court action as an agent for another and who also gives advice on legal matters that may or may not require court action. Many of the terms listed above may be used interchangeably depending on the jurisdiction. These titles, and the rank and powers attributed to them, vary significantly from province to province and from state to state, thus necessitating a careful check of the pertinent jurisdiction's usage before choosing a term for a legal text. The following trends may be noted. "Lawyer" is a generic term. "Counsel", frequently used in Canada, may be a general term, or may refer more specifically to a lawyer who can plead in court. A "barrister" is a courtroom lawyer as opposed to a "solicitor" who is basically an office lawyer.(In Canada, both of these functions may be carried out by the same person). In some jurisdictions, "attorney" is used as a synonym of "lawyer", but in others, "attorney" becomes synonymous with "solicitor". Moreover, an "attorney-at-law" may sometimes plead in court. "Advocate" is the general word for a lawyer in Roman law jurisdictions(i. e. Quebec). 3, record 48, English, - lawyer

A rate law is an algebraic expression giving the flux through a process in terms of the molecular abundances or concentrations of the molecules involved and perhaps including a number of other physical forces. Perhaps the most famous rate law in biology is the Henri-Michaelis-Menten rate law... Ohm's law is a more widely encountered example... Other famous linear rate laws are bulk flow, and diffusion. These and many others can be seen as special cases of the general principle that fluxes are driven by gradients in chemical potential. The simplest rate law of all is the linear, first order rate law kS which embodies the physical-chemical principle of mass action. Here k is the rate constant, and S is the concentration of the molecule that is moved or transformed by this process. 3, record 57, English, - rate%20law

At that Conference the international community unanimously adopted the Substantial New Programme of Action for the 1980s for the Least Developed Countries(SNPA), containing guidelines for domestic action by LDCs, which were to be complemented by international support measures. However, despite major policy reforms initiated by many LDCs to carry out a structural transformation of their domestic economies, and supportive measures taken by a number of donors in the areas of aid, debt and trade, the economic situation of these countries as a whole worsened during the 1980s. 1, record 67, English, - Substantial%20New%20Programme%20of%20Action%20for%20the%201980s%20for%20the%20Least%20Developed%20Countries

Mechanical street sweepers are the "heavy duty" machines of the industry; having the capability to move the most material in the least amount of time. This general class of street sweeper utilize a system of brooms and either a "squeegee" or belt conveyor to move debris from the ground into a hopper contained within the street sweeper. A mechanical broom sweeper can pick up large chunks of debris. A mechanical broom sweeper can "dig into" and remove hard packed dirt and mud. Mechanical sweepers are very efficient when picking up wet leaves, large aggregate particles, small limbs, smashed cans, etc. Dust control for this type of machine can be a problem because of the churning action of the brooms. The onboard street sweeper water spraying system(dust control) will generally mitigate dust when working in low debris areas. 1, record 69, English, - mechanical%20street%20sweeper

There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service: line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors: the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution. 1, record 70, English, - line%20eductor

Foam Concentrate Proportioners. In order that a predetermined volume of liquid foam concentrate may be taken from its source and placed into a water stream to form a foam solution of fixed concentration, the following two general method classifications are made : 1. 3, record 74, Spanish, - amparo

There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In more general French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 2, record 78, English, - poaching
