  • Artificial Intelligence
DEF

A production system is a human or computer system that has a data base of production rules and some control mechanism that selects applicable production rules in an effort to reach some goal state.

CONT

A key notion in the Newell-Simon scheme is the production system, in which an operation will be carried out if a certain specific condition is met. Programs consist of long sequences of such production systems operating on the data base. As described by the theorists, the production system is kind of a computational stimulus-response link; so long as the stimuli (or conditions) are appropriate, the response (or production) will be executed. In the course of developing the General Problem Solver, Simon and Newell have propounded a perspective on artificial intelligence, a theory of thinking, and an agenda for future research.

CONT

A set of production rules (which is called a production system) can be interpreted in two distinct ways. ... One way to interpret a production system is to work through the rules one by one until a rule is found for which the condition ... is true. ... Alternatively, the production system could be "run backwards", with the rules being run from "right to left".

OBS

A production system is a rule-based system. Computer scientists also call these systems general rewrite systems. Each rule is matched to the input, and the rules that apply rewrite the input according the action part of these rules.

Defamation can be divided into the two broad categories of libel and slander. The former has basically been associated with the written word but also extends to pictures, statues, films and even conduct implying a defamatory meaning. It is actionable without proof of damage, as general damages are presumed. It may even be the subject of a criminal prosecution. Slander, on the other hand, is generally conveyed by the spoken word and is not actionable per se, so that, no matter how offensive the language used is, an action lies only if special damages are pleaded and proved subject to certain exceptions.

Also, in the event of a loss of coolant accident(LOCA), plant response has been fully automated and operator action is not required for 3 days. "The firm engages in general civil practice with emphasis on business litigations". "No court in which a litigation to that end might be brought... This word is best not used, however, as an equivalent of action or suit :"Whether such claims are just need not be decided to determine the rights of the parties to this litigation [read suit]". Properly, litigation=the action or process of carrying on a suit in law or equity("OED") ;thus it does not refer to the suit itself, but to the maintenance of it. Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]".

This category of mistake is derived from a small group of cases most of them of modern times, although the doctrine existed at least as early as 1584. The general rule is that a man is estopped by his deed, and although there is no such estoppel in the case of ordinary signed documents, a party of full age and understanding is normally bound by his signature to a document, whether he reads or understands it or not. If, however, a party has been misled into executing a deed or signing a document essentially different from that which he intended to execute or sign, he can plead non est factum in an action against him. The concept of limitation must be contrasted with the concept of prescription. The former was unknown to the common law and is wholly a creature of statute. The latter was a common law rule of evidence based on the presumption of lost modern grant. The former abolishes stale or obsolete claims and operates in a negative fashion. The latter creates or establishes rights in land such as easements and operates in a positive fashion. (Anger & Honsberger, 2nd ed., 1985, p. 1496).

OBS

Statutes of Limitation are generally regarded as a means of protecting the defendant against a stale or unjust claim. Except in actions chiefly concerned with real property, in which, by the judicial interpretation of the limitation provisions applicable thereto, it has been held that the lapse of the statutory period operates to extinguish the right, "The Limitations Act" operates merely as a bar to the remedy by proceedings in the courts. Except where the statute by its terms absolutely extinguishes the debt or demand itself, the general rule with respect to debts, or more money demands is that statutes of limitation are regarded as barring the remedy, and not as extinguishing the cause of action.("C. poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline.

OBS

There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene.

CONT

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position ... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate ... The poaching shot is usually down the sidelines, wide of the opposing net guard.

DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

A rate law is an algebraic expression giving the flux through a process in terms of the molecular abundances or concentrations of the molecules involved and perhaps including a number of other physical forces. These and many others can be seen as special cases of the general principle that fluxes are driven by gradients in chemical potential. The simplest rate law of all is the linear, first order rate law kS which embodies the physical-chemical principle of mass action. Here k is the rate constant, and S is the concentration of the molecule that is moved or transformed by this process.

A mechanical broom sweeper can pick up large chunks of debris. A mechanical broom sweeper can "dig into" and remove hard packed dirt and mud. Mechanical sweepers are very efficient when picking up wet leaves, large aggregate particles, small limbs, smashed cans, etc. Dust control for this type of machine can be a problem because of the churning action of the brooms. There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service: line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors: the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution.

OBS

Foam Concentrate Proportioners. In order that a predetermined volume of liquid foam concentrate may be taken from its source and placed into a water stream to form a foam solution of fixed concentration, the following two general method classifications are made : 1. Pero, a nivel de nuestro continente la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos (Pacto de San José de Costa Rica) prevé la aplicación del amparo en su art. 24 a los países signatarios del mismo. DEF

A strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net on the serving team cuts in front of his or her partner in order to play a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. Used as a surprise tactic or to shield a weaker partner from pressure.

OBS

There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In more general French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene.
