Qualitative and quantitative studies show that people who consult complementary practitioners usually have longstanding conditions for which conventional medicine has not provided a satisfactory solution, either because it is insufficiently effective or because it causes adverse effects. They have generally already consulted a conventional healthcare practitioner for the problem, and many continue to use the two systems concurrently. Some "pick and mix" between complementary and conventional care, claiming that there are certain problems for which their general practitioner has the best approach and others for which a complementary practitioner is more appropriate. Most find their complementary practitioners through personal recommendation. 2, record 1, English, - complementary%20practitioner

Existing GIS data models are mostly based on the georelational data modeling approach. The relational data model does not support all the requirements of GISs as geographic reality cannot be captured efficiently with relational data modeling. That deficiency in capturing geographic reality imposes problems in manipulating, analyzing and processing spatial data. An object-oriented data model is more suitable as geographic entities can be represented more naturally. It will allow for a better semantic representation of spatial and attribute data in GISs. Object-oriented data modeling is also of particular importance for developing metadata and standardization in GISs. GIS software that are based on the object-oriented methodology and techniques facilitate simpler mechanisms for software interface, software modification and software extension. The workshop introduces general concepts and principles of object-oriented paradigm and practical considerations in implementing object-oriented GISs. The Children's Oral Health Initiative(COHI) was developed as a means to address the disparity between the oral health of First Nations and Inuit and that of the general Canadian population. COHI was launched on a test basis in Fall 2004. COHI focuses on the prevention of dental disease and promotion of good oral health practices. The goal of COHI is to shift the emphasis from a primarily treatment based approach to a more balanced prevention and treatment focus. The initial focus for oral health promotion will be directed at three target groups : pregnant women and primary caregivers; pre-school children, 0-4 years of age; and school children, 5-7 years of age. Health Canada expects that the COHI, once fully implemented in subsequent years, will result in significant improvement of the oral health in First Nations and Inuit. 1, record 19, English, - Children%27s%20Oral%20Health%20Initiative

Related to the concept of an "ultimate" limit to length of life is the idea of compression of mortality. This term is invoked(e. g., Fries, 1980) to describe a population in which the proportion of people surviving to advanced ages begins to approach what is assumed to be a biologically(presumably genetic) predetermined age limit to human survival. At this limit, the survival curve "rectangularizes", although a mathematically precise formulation of what constitutes rectangularization is not yet available. There are, however, a general set of order relations for different types of "survival curves" that we can use graphically to illustrate rectangularization. 1, record 31, English, - rectangularization

An approach in which the general features on enzyme active sites are studied by correlating the rates of reactions with the structures of the substrates. For instance, by comparing the rates of hydrolysis of a large number of amide derivation of amino acids, it has been demonstrated that chymotrypsin has a strong preference for substrates containing aromatic or bulky hydrophobic R groups, whereas elastase has a strong preference for substrates containing small hydrophobic R groups. Clearly the substrate-binding sites of these enzymes must contain features which account for the observed specificities. Another approach useful in mapping active sites is the use of reagents capable of covalently modifying different types of functional groups in enzyme molecules, in order to establish whether such groups are necessary for catalytic activity. 2, record 34, English, - active%20site%20mapping

The Federal Office of Regional Development(Quebec)(FORD-Q), the Biotechnology Research Institute(BRI) of the National Research Council(NRC), and the City of Montreal are today announcing a major investment, the first step toward the creation in Montreal of a research, development and demonstration centre, the first of its kind in Canada for the environmental technologies sector involved with industrial site remediation. This sector represents a market that is growing rapidly worldwide. The Montreal Centre of Excellence for Environmental Site Remediation fits perfectly into the concept of "technological platforms, "the approach favoured by Environment Canada to stimulate Metropolitan Montreal' s economy. Technological platforms make it possible to test environmental technologies and promote them to potential clients. This concept also contributes to furthering the economic growth of the environmental industry in the context of sustainable development. The Centre's mission will be to contribute to the development of effective and economical expertise in the area of restoring contaminated urban sites, which are a serious obstacle to economic development for cities in general and for Metropolitan Montreal in particular. It will also encourage the transfer of proven technologies to the private sector and the development of collaborative research projects and strategic alliances. 1, record 39, English, - Montreal%20Centre%20of%20Excellence%20for%20Environmental%20Site%20Remediation

1, record 39, French, - Centre%20d%27excellence%20en%20r%C3%A9habilitation%20de%20sites%20de%20Montr%C3%A9al

This paper presents a simple and effective method for matching two uncalibrated images. Corner points are firstly extracted as interest points in the two images. Each interest point is assigned one dominant orientation. The initial set of point matches is then obtained by singular value decomposition of a correspondence strength matrix. A new expression of this matrix is introduced to handle more complicated imaging conditions. Each element of this matrix is the similarity measure between two interest points. The new similarity measure is invariant to image rotation by taking into account the dominant orientation of the two interest points. The epipolar geometry constraint is finally imposed to reject the false matches. Experimental results on real images show this approach to be effective for general image matching. 4, record 48, English, - singular%20value%20decomposition

The general idea was that statewide working groups would develop the overarching values and chart the general directions, and implementation would be left to the regions. While this approach is appropriate for a large state, we noted our concern early on about the relationship between the statewide working groups and the regional collaboratives. We feared a balkanization of planning and in our February 1999 feedback letter on your 1998 State Plan suggested that all statewide working groups and regional collaboratives adopt the goals of an effective statewide system to assure consistency of principle and purpose. 3, record 55, English, - balkanization%20of%20planning

A second general mechanism to lower the cost of capital is to reduce the level of corporate income tax. Australia has adopted a variation of this approach by eliminating the double taxation of dividends through its policy of dividend imputation. 2, record 79, French, - boulwarisme

The Ministry of the Environment has published general guidelines to assist proponents in identifying general areas that may be of concern. These guidelines only present an overview and identify a range of factors(including social ones) that might be relevant in the planning of a specific undertaking. The most common problem with this approach is that it does not provide the kind of "road map" that some proponents seem to want when dealing with the social and community components of environmental assessments. 1, record 81, English, - road%20map

1, record 81, French, - plan

While the critics of A. I. were not easily silenced, there were, by general consensus, a new burst of energy and several significant achievements in the field in the early 1970s. This second wave is epitomized by Winograd's SHRDLU, the shift from generalist to expert knowledge systems, and the fusion of features of declarative and procedural approaches. At this time, there was another vital, though rather controversial trend : the increasing used of a top-down approach to the understanding of language and other cognitive domains, as exemplified in Roger Schank's scripts and Marvin Minsky's frames. 1, record 82, English, - top%2Ddown%20approach
