Alberta produced a report that provides a snapshot of the status of more than 2800 wild species in the province, entitled The General Status of Alberta Wild Species 2005. The report contains assessments for 2811 species under 10 categories : birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, butterflies, gastropods(e. g., snails), bivalves(e. g., clams), odonates(e. g., dragonflies) and vascular plants(e. g., wild roses). These assessments are based on criteria that include species’ population size, distribution and trends, and threats to habitats. Assessment information is categorized into meaningful groupings, which helps the province identify species that need attention. Species’ status data are used by provincial wildlife and fisheries biologists to plan and set priorities for species’ management activities. These activities may include identifying habitat, monitoring survival and identifying threats. 1, record 1, English, - The%20General%20Status%20of%20Alberta%20Wild%20Species%202005

Monitoring simply means repetitive measurement. In the general context of environmental impact assessment, it usually refers to the measurement of environmental variables after a development proposal has been initiated(the baseline constituting such measurement before project initiation). In the specific context of ecological investigations within impact assessment(i. e., the context of this report), our use of the term monitoring refers to repetitive measurement of specific ecological phenomena to document change primarily for the purposes of(i) testing impact hypotheses and predictions and(ii) testing mitigative measures. 1, record 2, English, - ecological%20phenomenon

... laboratory or field experiments could provide some guidance. The obvious ecological phenomenon of interest would be bioaccumulation, the application of which would involve dose-response experiments using the identified target species, or food chain studies if trophic linkages were involved. Such focussed activities would also identify the need for specific, quantitative baseline data. 1, record 2, English, - ecological%20phenomenon

1, record 2, French, - ph%C3%A9nom%C3%A8ne%20%C3%A9cologique
