A general term relating to any of several documents customarily associated with the international shipment of merchandise. Among these documents are a bill of lading, certificate of origin, customs or consular invoice, insurance certificate, dock receipt, and inspection certificates. Shipping documents are usually required by letters of credit and in transactions involving bills of lading.

In 2022, in order to mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Canadian Bravery Decorations by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Governor General authorized the creation of a new insignia to accompany the Certificate of Commendation created in 1993, which became known as the Governor General' s Commendation for Bravery(GGCB).
