OBS

... the practice of chemistry is regulated by the Province of Alberta through the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (ACPA). Only chemists who are registered members of the ACPA may use the title P.Chem. (Professional Chemist) or C.I.T. (Chemist in Training) as appropriate. These titles provide immediate assurance to government, industry and the public that specific levels of education and experience have been met.

OBS

The objectives of the ACPA. 1. To ensure that [the] members meet the high standards of professional competence and ethics needed for the protection of industry and the public. 2. To increase the knowledge, skills and proficiency of [the] members in all things relating to chemistry. 3. To foster greater general interest in chemistry and a better understanding of the chemical profession by industry and the public at large. 4. To provide a recognized voice for professional chemists in Alberta.

CONT

Nutrient Loads and Concentrations. As part of nationwide initiatives... to reduce non-point source water pollution, a great deal of study went in to determining how land-use and nutrient production was correlated [and these studies produced] a great deal of "average" and "typical" effects of changing land use on water qualities. These data are called "event mean concentrations"(EMC' s) for a given nutrient and land use. In general, these data are the source of the nutrient chemistry in our model.

CONT

OBS

Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry(LC-MS, or alternatively HPLC-MS) isan analytical chemistry technique that combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography(or HPLC) with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry(MS). LC-MS is a powerfultechnique that has very high sensitivity and selectivity and so is useful in many applications. Its application is oriented towards the separation, general detection and potential identification of chemicals of particular masses in the presence of other chemicals[. ]

OBS

There are many different mass analyzers that can be used in LC/MS. Single quadrupole, triple quadrupole, ion trap, time of flight (TOF) and quadrupole-time of flight (Q-TOF).

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
DEF

Of a chemical species that has the properties of a base.

OBS

A base in chemistry is a substance that can accept hydrogen ions or more generally, donate electron pairs. A soluble base is referred to as an alkali if it contains and releases hydroxide ions(OH−) quantitatively. The Brønsted-Lowry theory defines bases as proton(hydrogen ion) acceptors, while the more general Lewis theory defines bases as electron pair donors, allowing other Lewis acids than protons to be included.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
DEF

CONT

Irradiation-Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Austenitic Stainless Steels. In recent years, failures of reactor internal components have been observed after the components have reached neutron fluence levels... The general pattern of the observed failures indicates that as nuclear plants age and fluence increases, various apparently nonsensitized austenitic stainless steels become susceptible to intergranular failure... Irradiation produces defects and defect clusters in grain matrices and alters the dislocation network, dislocation loop, and dislocation channel structures, leading to radiation-induced hardening. Irradiation also leads to changes in the stability of second-phase precipitates and the local chemistry near grain boundaries, precipitates, and defect clusters.

CONT
