In 1889 the 1st CGPM [General Conference on Weights and Measures] sanctioned the international prototypes for the metre and the kilogram. La 1re Conférence générale des poids et mesures, en 1889, adopta les nouveaux étalons du mètre et du kilogramme [...] pour servir de base internationale du système métrique. Depuis, ce système s'est étendu et perfectionné. La 11e Conférence générale des poids et mesures, en 1960, lui a donné le nom de «système international d'unités» ou, en abrégé, SI, dans toutes les langues.
