Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 27, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

Oil slick dispersants. When oil ... is treated with a suitable surface active agent and agitation applied, the oil is broken up into particles ... so small that they constitute an oil-in-water emulsion ... Dispersants serve to increase the surface area of an oil spill and disperse oil globules throughout the layer volume water. This causes an accelerated degradation of oil by microbiological action. 7, record 30, English, - dispersant

The chemicals used to disperse the oil are emulsifiers. Although a chemist would never confuse the terms dispersant and emulsifier, the former designating a product which encourages the distribution of finely divided solids in a fluid, either liquid or gas, the latter referring to a product which encourages the colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another, the terms are synonymous in the field of oil pollution control. This is explained by the following sentence taken from "The Control of oil pollution on the sea and inland waters", edited by J. Wardley-Smith(source COCOB) :"It was found... [that the product] when sprayed on to the oil, effectively softened and dispersed it by means of emulsification... "The dispersion is accomplished by products which emulsify the oil, i. e., emulsifiers. Dispersion is used in its general sense and hence dispersant simply means a product that causes spreading. Also dispersant is used more frequently than emulsifier. 8, record 30, English, - dispersant

The Business Integration Office(BIO), also included in the Office of the Director General ensures the effective operation of BGTD, including operational and strategic planning and performance measurement. Within BGTD, this Office manages broad projects of a strategic nature(both long term and emerging). While some of these will change over time, currently the office is focused on coordinating BGTD's projects related to the Therapeutic Access Strategy. One of the commitments under TAS is the endorsement of open and transparent performance reporting practices. BIO is the lead for implementing a culture of increased transparency and openness with our stakeholders through citizen and stakeholder engagement initiatives. Recognizing the value and necessity of leveraging international science and policy expertise, this Office also researches and coordinates opportunities for partnerships with international regulatory counterparts, and such bodies as the National Institute for Biological Standardization and Control(NIBSC) and the World Health Organization(WHO). 1, record 53, English, - Business%20Integration%20Office

The results of epidemiological studies obviously depend on the comparisons made between the cases and control groups used. If the groups are not well matched, the results will not be meaningful. For this reason cases and control groups may be matched for age, sex and race, as well as lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. Occupational groups very often have lower total mortality than the general population as the latter includes people unable to work due to illness or disability. In other words, any group of workers is likely to be more healthy than the population as a whole, a phenomenon known as the "healthy worker effect. Pneumatic systems are often compared to hydraulic systems, but such comparisons can only hold true in general terms.... Control valves are... a necessary part of a typical pneumatic system.... The control valve consists of a lever with two lobes. [In the off position], a spring holds the left poppet closed so that compressed air entering the pressure port cannot flow to the brakes. [In the on position], one lobe of the lever holds the left poppet open and a spring closes the right poppet. Compressed air now flows around the opened left poppet, through a drilled passage, and into a chamber below the right poppet. Since the right poppet is closed, the high-pressure air flows out of the brake port and into the brake line to apply the brakes. To release the brakes, the control valve is returned to the off position. 3, record 77, English, - control%20valve

Online learning support is an integral part of the online learning process in guiding learners and providing feedback(Coomey & Stephenson, 2001; Oliver, 2001). In learner-centred instruction, learners direct and control various aspects of their learning(e. g. learning outcomes, choice of group members), with instructors in the background providing advice and general guidelines on resources and procedures. Various means of online learning support include :-Learning guides(e. g. generic ones on study and research skills or specific guides on how to complete a particular online course).-Online mentors and buddies who facilitate, coach or guide learners through the course.-Online personal learning portfolios(e. g. learners’ journals, personal learning logs) to promote self-reflection(a critical component of learner-centred instruction).-Online public learning portfolios to encourage peer review and feedback on each other's work. 1, record 93, English, - online%20learning%20support
