A key notion in the Newell-Simon scheme is the production system, in which an operation will be carried out if a certain specific condition is met. Programs consist of long sequences of such production systems operating on the data base. As described by the theorists, the production system is kind of a computational stimulus-response link; so long as the stimuli(or conditions) are appropriate, the response(or production) will be executed. In the course of developing the General Problem Solver, Simon and Newell have propounded a perspective on artificial intelligence, a theory of thinking, and an agenda for future research. 5, record 2, English, - production%20system

A set of production rules (which is called a production system) can be interpreted in two distinct ways. ... One way to interpret a production system is to work through the rules one by one until a rule is found for which the condition ... is true. ... pound : A measure of weight and mass derived from the ancient Roman "libra"(=327. 25 grams), but very [often] modified in the course of ages in different countries, and... used for different classes of things; in Great Britain, now fixed for use in trade by a Parliamentary standard. Denoted by "lb. "(Latin "libra"). Formerly used without change in the pl., a usage still sometimes retained after a numeral, esp. dial. and colloq., also in comb. as "a five pound note, ""a twenty pound shot. "This pound consisted originally of 12 ounces, corresponding more or less to that of troy weight, which contains 5760 grains=373. 26 grams. This is still used by goldsmiths and jewellers in stating the weight of gold, silver, and precious stones, but as early as the thirteenth or fourteenth century, a pound of sixteen ounces was in use for more bulky commodities. This was made a standard for general purposes of trade by Edward III, and known as the pound "aveir de peis, "i. e. of merchandise of weight, now called "avoirdupois. "This pound of 16 ounces, containing 7000 grains=453. 6 grams, has been since 1826 the only legal pound for buying or selling any commodity in Great Britain. In former times, the pound varied locally from 12 to 27 ounces, according to the commodity, pounds of different weight being often used in the same place for different articles such as bread, butter, cheese, meat, malt, hay, wool... The Scotch pound of 16 ounces of Troy or Dutch Weight consisted of 7608. 9496 grains; the Tron pound kept at Edinburgh=9622. 67 grains. "Pound" is also used to translate foreign names of weights, of cognate origin or representatives of Latin "libra. "These vary greatly : in Italy, between 300 and 350 grams, in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and some German states, between 459 and 469 grams, and in other German states, Denmark, etc., between 477 and 510. 22 grams. But the standard German "Pfund" is now 500 grams, i. e. half a kilogram. 10, record 3, English, - pound
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 7 OBS
With regard to the pound, the values currently in use are: 1 imperial standard pound = 0.453 592 338 kgm. [kilogram]; 1 Canadian pound = 0.453 592 43 kgm.; 1 United States pound = 0.453 592 4277 kgm. 10, record 3, English, - pound

7, record 3, French, - livre
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 3 OBS
6, record 3, French, - livre

Speed up effects : Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump,... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working : the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect. "So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 metres per second in a natural "tunnel. On peut dire «une entreprise hasardeuse», «une affaire hasardeuse», mais pas une «substance hasardeuse». Quant à «substance nocive» ce n'est pas un équivalent juste de «hazardous substance», mais bien l'équivalent du terme anglais «deleterious substance». 5, record 24, French, - substance%20dangereuse

Online learning support is an integral part of the online learning process in guiding learners and providing feedback(Coomey & Stephenson, 2001; Oliver, 2001). In learner-centred instruction, learners direct and control various aspects of their learning(e. g. learning outcomes, choice of group members), with instructors in the background providing advice and general guidelines on resources and procedures. Various means of online learning support include :-Learning guides(e. g. generic ones on study and research skills or specific guides on how to complete a particular online course).-Online mentors and buddies who facilitate, coach or guide learners through the course.-Online personal learning portfolios(e. g. learners’ journals, personal learning logs) to promote self-reflection(a critical component of learner-centred instruction).-Online public learning portfolios to encourage peer review and feedback on each other's work. 1, record 25, English, - online%20learning%20support

Is the HSB a special case? Is it possible to generalise the analysis of the HSB movement and to extend it to other organisations, or is this housing co-operative federation a very special case? It is the contention of this paper that the results are of general interest and with relevance for a wide range of organisations, especially those within the non-profit and voluntary sectors. Of course, it is not possible to, within the limits of this paper, to prove this. However, some indications in favour of this position will be put forward. This circumstantial evidence concern three other Swedish organisations-one a formally non-profit building company, one fund which collects money in order to support research for a cure against cancer, the third being the Union for asthmatics and allergics. 1, record 29, English, - non%2Dprofit%20building%20company

This is of course the case if p is the expectation of a Gaussian variable, but Poincaré gives a more general solution, now called Gibbs distribution. This fact was rediscovered independently by Szilard in 1925. Then, around 1935, Koopman, Pitman, and Darmois asked the same question concerning the most general estimation procedure, without being restricted to maximum likelihood. This property of the Gibbs distribution, called sufficiency by statisticians, plays a central role in the Szilard-Mandelbrot axiomatic presentation of statistical thermodynamics.... 1, record 31, English, - Gibbs%20distribution

In BIP-I, the student model is defined only in terms of the skills, though in general other levels could be used as well. Associated with each skill is a pair of numerical values. One value stands for the system's estimate of the student's mastery of the skill and is updated by very simple techniques according to his performance on each task. The other stands for the student's own estimate of his understanding and is updated in the course of a short interview following each exercise. Since problem selection takes both values into account, this is an interesting, albeit simple, combination of inferential and interactive diagnosis. 2, record 43, English, - interactive%20diagnosis

... when war breaks out between certain powers, each nation wishing to remain impartial should normally issue either a special or general declaration of neutrality. Such a declaration, however, is by no means absolute. A neutral state may, during the course of the hostilities, repeal, change, or modify its position of neutrality, provided that such alterations are in accordance with international law and are applied without bias to all belligerents. The most important of the rights that result from a declaration of neutrality is the right of territorial integrity.
