GENERAL DEFECT [11 records]

Record 1 2025-02-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Clocks, Watches and Bells
CONT

... the general problem with the Riefler clocks... was that, although they were very accurate over short periods, changes in their rates made them of little use for studies extending over several months. This defect was remedied to a great extent in the Shortt clock..., which was invented by the British engineer William Shortt... Like in the Riefler clock, the master pendulum of the Shortt clock was housed in a largely evacuated tube. The master pendulum synchronized the motion of a second "slave" pendulum. The slave pendulum sent electrical signals to the master's drive mechanism and to operate the dialwork on the slave clock. By an elaborate electromechanical feedback the master and slave pendulums kept each other synchronized.

Fruit in this class must be of good quality. They must be characteristic of the variety and/or commercial type. The following slight defects, however, may be allowed provided these do not affect the general appearance of the produce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentation in the package : slight defect in shape, slight defect in colouring, slight skin defects occurring during the formation of the fruit, slight healed defects due to a mechanical cause such as hail damage, rubbing, damage from handling, etc.

  • Wind Energy
DEF

The ratio of the first standard deviation of wind speed to the mean wind speed.

CONT

Eimern... has reviewed the effects of windbreaks and shelter belts. Some general conclusions... are : a) the velocity defect behind porous objects generally persists twice as far... b) the turbulence intensity behind porous objects is diminished with respect to levels in solid object wakes.

Subject field(s)
  • Tracks and Roadways (Rail Transport)
DEF

Any progressive fracture which occurs in the head of a rail and has a transverse separation, however slight. This general classification is made when the defect is found in track. After the rail is broken for examination, the transverse can be accurately identified as one of the following : transverse fissure, compound fissure, detail fracture from shelling, detail fracture from head check, engine burn fracture, welded burn fracture(see those words).

OBS

transverse defect: term officially approved by Canadian Pacific and CN.

CONT

Dans les défauts (transversaux) du champignon, on trouve les fissurations horizontales transversales, verticales, les empreintes de patinage, etc.

Subject field(s)
  • Tort Law (common law)
CONT

The field of occupier's liability has been complicated further by an overridding distinction between an "activity duty" and an "occupancy duty", which derives from the misfeasance-nonfeasance dichotomy. If an entrant is injured by "current operations" being carried out by the occupier on the land, as opposed to a defect or danger in the condition of the land, the courts will impose the general duty to use reasonable care. This general duty is owed to all persons lawfully on the premises, but it is unclear whether it is also applicable to trespassers whose presence is known or probable.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Droit des délits (common law)
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Metallography
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
CONT

Irradiation-Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Austenitic Stainless Steels. In recent years, failures of reactor internal components have been observed after the components have reached neutron fluence levels... The general pattern of the observed failures indicates that as nuclear plants age and fluence increases, various apparently nonsensitized austenitic stainless steels become susceptible to intergranular failure... Irradiation produces defects and defect clusters in grain matrices and alters the dislocation network, dislocation loop, and dislocation channel structures, leading to radiation-induced hardening. Irradiation also leads to changes in the stability of second-phase precipitates and the local chemistry near grain boundaries, precipitates, and defect clusters.

Key term(s)
  • irradiation assisted stress corrosion
  • irradiation induced stress corrosion

French

Domaine(s)
  • Métallographie
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
CONT
