As a general rule of Canadian evidence law, the previous out-of-court statements of a witness or victim are not to be the subject of testimony in court. In regard to statements by a child who is not called as a witness, any statements made by the child to others would normally be regarded as hearsay and therefore inadmissible. Although the general rules about the exclusion of previous consistent statements and hearsay are basically sound, they can be problematic when applied to cases involving children who are victims of abuse. Not infrequently in child abuse cases, the initial disclosures of abuse by the child to a parent or another trusted person are graphic and highly revealing. Conversely, if the accused argues that a child has been subject to improper coaching or interviewing to make the allegations, [an] inquiry into the circumstances in which the allegations were first made can be vitally important. As a result of these types of concerns Canadian judges have significantly liberalized the rules about admitting this type of evidence, making changes to the common law that in some other countries have been achieved by legislative reforms. 3, record 2, English, - victim%20of%20abuse

When evaluating a patient who has evidence of cognitive decline, a number of reversible causes need to be excluded before one can diagnose a neurodegenerative pathology. One well‐known cause that needs to be excluded is depression.... Less commonly, other psychiatric conditions, such as mania, other psychoses, and conversion disorder, can also impair cognition and produce a similar clinical picture. Historically, this general phenomenon has been known as "pseudodementia"—defined as a psychiatric condition masquerading as neurodegenerative disease, but which is largely reversible when the psychiatric condition resolves or is successfully treated. 2, record 4, English, - pseudodementia

High aspect ratio, or fiber-shaped, nanoparticles(HARNs), represent a growth area in nanotechnology as their useful properties become more apparent. Carbon nanotubes, the best known and studied of the HARNs, are handled on an increasingly large scale, with subsequent potential for human inhalation exposure. Their resemblance to asbestos fibers precipitated fears that they might show the same type of pathology as that caused by asbestos and there is emerging evidence to support this possibility. The large number of other HARNs, including nanorods, nanowires and other nanofibers, require similar toxicological scrutiny. In this article, we describe the unusual hazard associated with fibers, with special reference to asbestos, and address the features of fibers that dictate their pathogenicity as developed in the fiber pathogenicity paradigm. This paradigm is a robust structure-toxicity model that identifies thin, long, biopersistent fibers as the effective dose for fiber-type pathogenic effects. It is likely that HARNs will in general conform to the paradigm and such an understanding of the features that make fibers pathogenic should enable us to design safer HARNs. 3, record 6, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

(Nanowerk News) A UK consortium of scientists, led by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh, has published a key report examining whether high aspect ratio nanoparticles (HARN) should raise the same concerns as asbestos fibres. HARN includes materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires. The review, which was published by DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] this week, identified many similarities between HARN and asbestos with regard to their physico-chemical properties and toxicological effects, and it concluded that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that HARN, which have the same characteristics (diameter, length and biopersitance) as pathogenic fibres such as asbestos, are likely to have similar pathology. 4, record 6, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

Sediment-hosted stratiform copper(SSC) or "diagenetic sedimentary" copper deposits belong to a large family of diverse, more or less concordant and discordant copper deposits and occurrences that show a close relationship to their sedimentary host rocks. In this sense they are "sedimentary", even though available evidence supports diagenetic precipitation of metals at redox boundaries rather than syngenetic metal deposition. Nomenclature for deposits of this type is problematic and no general term referring to them is entirely satisfactory.... Because of [their] inferred diagenetic origin, the term "diagenetic sedimentary" copper deposits is a reasonable designation... but... the term "sediment-hosted stratiform" copper deposits is widely accepted for such deposits... 2, record 29, English, - sediment%2Dhosted%20stratiform%20copper%20deposit

1, record 29, French, - g%C3%AEte%20stratiforme%20de%20cuivre%20dans%20des%20roches%20s%C3%A9dimentaires

Is the HSB a special case? Is it possible to generalise the analysis of the HSB movement and to extend it to other organisations, or is this housing co-operative federation a very special case? It is the contention of this paper that the results are of general interest and with relevance for a wide range of organisations, especially those within the non-profit and voluntary sectors. Of course, it is not possible to, within the limits of this paper, to prove this. However, some indications in favour of this position will be put forward. Losses caused by fungi include general deterioration of the grain, loss in germination and dry matter, heating, and the development of mustiness. Thermophilic or heat tolerant fungi can push grains mass temperatures beyond the range of insect survival. Medical evidence shows that mouldy grain or hay is the cause of farmers lung disease. Under favourable temperature and moisture conditions, some fungi produce mycotoxins. These toxins cause different animal diseases including abortions, reduced fertility and general ill-health. They also make grain unfit for human consumption. The production of mycotoxins is more common in warmer humid climates than in areas with a dry climate. 1, record 38, English, - thermophilic%20fungi

1, record 38, French, - myc%C3%A8te%20thermophile

Osteonecrosis, without evidence of an inflammatory process or sepsis, is usually regarded as secondary to loss of the blood supply(avascular necrosis of bone). Some argue that metabolic changes in the osteocytes are responsible for bone death in certain forms of the disease and recommend the general term osteonecrosis. An older synonym that emphasizes the lack of an inflammatory component is aseptic necrosis. Since the precise pathogenesis remains unknown and major vascular loss is not always evident, the term osteonecrosis seems preferable. Tamper-Evident Closures. Tamper-evident caps have been in use for years, though earlier they were referred to as "pilferproof caps". Today these metal and plastic caps provide visible evidence of seal disruption and are used for over-the-counter(OTC) drugs, beverages, and food products. The two kinds of TE closures are "breakaway" or "tear band" closures used for pressurized and general sealing applications, and TE vacuum designs for vacuum sealing applications. The closure user can also fulfill tamper-evident requirements through the use of innerseals.... 1, record 43, English, - tamper%2Devident%20closure

Common industry usage substitutes the term "tamper-evident" for the term "tamper-resistant" .... The FDA has not objected to this substitution, nor has it made any official recognition of it as a synonymous term ... [It] seems likely that use of both terms will continue for some time. All the practitioners and the FDA are agreed that the term "tamper-proof" is not appropriate and must not be used. 1, record 43, English, - tamper%2Devident%20closure
