GENERAL EXTRA [7 records]

Record 1 2023-02-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • String Instruments
DEF

A violin case is a must... The fragility of string instruments, particularly violins and violas, requires an extra layer of protection whenever the instrument isn’t in use. The case shields [the] violin from the bumps and dings of general movement in daily life. It protects the violin body from cracking or breaking if the case is knocked or tripped over, and blocks the finish and underlying wood from direct contact with sunlight or moisture.

DEF

Meat recovered from bone using separation machinery.

OBS

Mechanical recovery increases the efficiency of separation and thereby allows the recovery of extra meat per carcass; it is also less time consuming than hand boning of meat.... Composition of meat recovered varies between the methods used, but in general consists of comminuted meat, bone marrow, collagen, bone and fat.

Subject field(s)
  • Dashboards and Instrumentation (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

(a :general), type of control panel(b : special), a panelled unit fitted below the dashboard or around the gearstick of a car for decorative purposes and to take extra controls, instruments, radio fittings, etc.

OBS

The general term in english is "console", and it processes much the same meaning as that given under (a) above. When used in the custom car context, it is usually modified with one of a number of adjectives as indicated above, to define where in the interior of the car it is fitted: centre console, radio console, tunnel cover, roof console.

OBS

"Tunnel cover" is the term for that part of a centre console which extends into the rear seat area of the providing a more aesthetic effect. The term console is widely used throughout the car world, eg (Car Mechanics, Nov. 1979) "... extra panelling. Such as a centre console. Door armrests, and dashboard extensions. "And" ... you may wish to fit ... a ready-made centre console".

Subject field(s)
  • Gemmology
  • Diamond Industry
DEF

A facet placed without regard for symmetry and not required by the cutting style.

CONT

Usually found near the girdle, extra facets are the result of smoothing out nicks, chips, naturals, abrasions, and other blemishes or, in some instances, of errors in polishing. Not to be confused with additional facets.

CONT

Extra Facets-Facets not defined on the pattern sheet. In general, extra facets are cut by miss-indexing.

OBS

additional facets: Facets added symmetrically to a standard cutting style to create variations in cut. These are not blemishes and should not be confused with extra facets.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gemmologie
  • Industrie diamantaire
DEF

Record 5 1992-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Transport of Goods
CONT

Some extra comments should be added with respect to waste dangerous goods. The TDG Regulations deal with three types of waste as dangerous goods. The first is those dangerous goods which have "served their purpose" and are now a waste, but retain sufficient danger that they are a dangerous good. These are referred to as waste dangerous goods and, in general, their shipping name is as it was before, with the word waste placed in front. Thus "nitric acid" becomes "waste nitric acid".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Transport de marchandises
OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Joining Elements (Mechanical Components)
  • Machine-Tooling (Metallurgy)
CONT

Unified and American National screw thread standards for screws, bolts, nuts, and other threaded parts consist of six series of threads and a selection of special threads that cover nonstandard combinations of diameter and pitch. In general the unified screw threads are limited to three series : coarse(UNC), fine(UNF), and extrafine(UNEF). A 1/4-inch-diameter thread in the UNC series has 20 threads/in., while in the UNF series it has 28... The fine thread series(UNF and NF) is recommended for general use in the automotive and air craft fields for threads subject to strong vibration. In general, a fine thread should be used only where close adjustment, extra strength, or increased resistance to loosening is a factor.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments d'assemblage (Composants mécaniques)
  • Usinage (Métallurgie)
OBS

Série à filets fins. Pour pièces et équipement où l'emploi des filets fins est plus avantageux. Ce filetage offre une plus grande résistance à la traction et à la torsion, tout en étant moins sujet au déboulonnage sous l'effet des vibrations.

OBS

"UNF"="Unified fine thread" (pas fin).

CONT

Threads are designated by standardized notes. Under the unified system, threads are specified by giving in order the nominal diameter, number of threads per inch, the initial letters such as UNC or UNF that identify the series, and class of thread (1A, 2A, and 3A or 1B, 2B, and 3B). Threads are considered to be right-hand and single unless otherwise noted; therefore the specification for a left-hand thread must have the letters LH included.

CONT

Norme BS 1580 : 1953 "Unified Screw Threads".
