English

Subject field(s)
  • National and International Economics
  • National Accounting
DEF

The way in which total national income is divided among households in the economy.

CONT

A characteristic of the income distribution of virtually all economies is that a high proportion of households have incomes falling within the lower-size classes, while a very small proportion of households fall within the high-income classes. This feature remains remarkably stable over time, the main changes being a general upward shift in the whole distribution, rather than a greater compression of it.

  • The Press (News and Journalism)
CONT

An alternative newspaper is a type of newspaper that eschews comprehensive coverage of general news in favour of stylized reporting, opinionated reviews and columns, investigations into edgy topics and magazine-style feature stories highlighting local people and culture. Its news coverage is more locally focused, and [its] target audiences are younger than those of daily newspapers.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Presse écrite
CONT

The existence of composite systems assigned quantum states that cannot be recovered from the quantum states of the constituents of the system.

CONT

There are difficult questions about the correct formal structure for quantum theory in general, and how to characterize non-separability in particular, but it remains a core feature of any quantum theory that some states will have this character.

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
DEF

The substrate concentration at which all enzyme-active sites are occupied and, consequently, at which the reaction velocity is maximal.

CONT

The general principles of chemical-reaction kinetics apply to enzyme-catalyzed reactions, but they also show a distinctive feature not usually observed in nonenzymatic reactions, saturation with substrate.... At a low substrate concentration, the initial reaction velocity vo is nearly proportional to the substrate concentration, and the reaction is thus approximately first order with respect to the substrate. However, as the substrate concentration is increased, the initial rate increases less, so that is is no longer nearly proportional to the substrate concentration; in this zone, the reaction is mixed order. With a further increase in the substrate concentration, the reaction rate becomes essentially independent of substrate concentration and asymptotically approaches a constant rate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie
DEF

Nevertheless, clustering real-world data sets often raises problems, since the data space is usually a high dimensional feature space. A prominent example is the application of cluster analysis to gene expression data.... In general, most of the common clustering algorithms fail to generate meaningful results because of the inherent sparsity of the data space. In such high dimensional feature spaces data does not cluster anymore.

OBS

The modern world is full of large data sets: census data, multimedia databases, and remote sensing data, to name a few. With the aid of computers it is possible to collect scientific data on a grand scale. These examples are not "large" merely because they have many data points. They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. We can think of that person’s record as a point in 12 dimensional space.

London smog episodes were caused largely by soot from coal fires, and London’s major air pollution disasters therefore occurred nearly always in the dead of the winter.

OBS

The two general types of smog are the "coal smog" (it killed 4,000 people in London in 1952) and the "photochemical smog" (the predominant type in Southern California).

OBS

A reduced atmosphere is the general chemical feature of the London smog; an oxidized atmosphere is the chemical feature of the Los Angeles smog.

DEF

CONT

[In water transport] such contracts, commonly called contracts of affreightment, encompasss a heterogeneous mass of maritime agreements, comprising such differing types of contracts for the lease of a vessel (bareboat or demise charters), voyage and time charter parties, and bills of lading, including bills of lading in liner trades.

OBS

The typical feature of such contracts is that the undertaking by the shipowner(ship operator), contrary to what is usually the case under bills of lading and charter parties in general, is not linked to any particular vessel or vessels, and that as a consequence his undertaking is of a generic nature. These contracts, it is said, are not real "chartering contracts" as there is no charter-party, but only an "agreement".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Droit maritime
  • Droit des contrats (common law)
CONT

DEF

An analytic principle in linguistics whereby pairs of linguistic features, seen as oppositions, are given different values of positive(marked) and neutral or negative(unmarked). In its most general sense, this distinction refers to the presence versus the absence of a particular linguistic feature.

CONT

Jacobson pointed out that most linguistic contrast are not equivalent or reversible : one pole of the contrast is more basic (or unmarked), while the other is essentially defined in relation to the basic pole, and is therefore marked. For example, at the level of sound structure, a voiceless sound is unmarked in contrast to a marked one; at the level of lexical semantics, the word "long" is unmarked, in contrast to the word "short" which is marked. The concept of markedness found its way into descriptions at each level of language and ... exerted a major influence on adjacent fields.
