A plate or even amount of light, often used to eliminate or soften too-black shadows, to fill in dark areas, is called "fill"(base) light. Scoops are usually the source of fill light, the quality of which is soft, with no direction and no shadows. The non-directional, soft light from a scoop is called general illumination.

Many different types of flood lamp are in common use, among them the following. Broads are fixed horizontally, and longer than they are high. They are used to provide fill light.

LACIN, 1967, p. 132) utilise aussi le terme "Lumière ambiante" au sens de lumière naturelle environnante, par opposition à la lumière d'appoint qui est une source artificielle d'éclairage. Il est à noter que les sources unilingues consultées ne font pas la distinction de cause à effet entre les termes LUMIÈRE ("light") et ÉCLAIRAGE ("lighting"), et emploient les deux notions de façon interchangeable.
