pound : A measure of weight and mass derived from the ancient Roman "libra"(=327. 25 grams), but very [often] modified in the course of ages in different countries, and... used for different classes of things; in Great Britain, now fixed for use in trade by a Parliamentary standard. Denoted by "lb. "(Latin "libra"). Formerly used without change in the pl., a usage still sometimes retained after a numeral, esp. dial. and colloq., also in comb. as "a five pound note, ""a twenty pound shot. "This pound consisted originally of 12 ounces, corresponding more or less to that of troy weight, which contains 5760 grains=373. 26 grams. This is still used by goldsmiths and jewellers in stating the weight of gold, silver, and precious stones, but as early as the thirteenth or fourteenth century, a pound of sixteen ounces was in use for more bulky commodities. This was made a standard for general purposes of trade by Edward III, and known as the pound "aveir de peis, "i. e. of merchandise of weight, now called "avoirdupois. "This pound of 16 ounces, containing 7000 grains=453. 6 grams, has been since 1826 the only legal pound for buying or selling any commodity in Great Britain. In former times, the pound varied locally from 12 to 27 ounces, according to the commodity, pounds of different weight being often used in the same place for different articles such as bread, butter, cheese, meat, malt, hay, wool... The Scotch pound of 16 ounces of Troy or Dutch Weight consisted of 7608. 9496 grains; the Tron pound kept at Edinburgh=9622. 67 grains. "Pound" is also used to translate foreign names of weights, of cognate origin or representatives of Latin "libra. "These vary greatly : in Italy, between 300 and 350 grams, in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and some German states, between 459 and 469 grams, and in other German states, Denmark, etc., between 477 and 510. 22 grams. But the standard German "Pfund" is now 500 grams, i. e. half a kilogram. 10, record 3, English, - pound

7, record 3, French, - livre
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 3 OBS
6, record 3, French, - livre

Once again, the environmental groups appearing before the Committee were opposed to the two recommendations, claiming that they were in fact not necessary. The joint CELA/CIELAP submission to the Committee argued that the criticism that MMLERs are not "scientifically based" was simply out of place and did not reflect the nature of how the regulations were developed and administered. The regulations remain technically defensible since they are based on what is technologically feasible, and not what is required from an ecological point of view. In actual fact, the problem is not the existence of poor science, but rather that the MMLERs are not tough enough to protect local ecosystems.(19) The joint brief went on to note that as a general principle, the natural background levels of metals in waters and sediments are not germane to the notion of technology-based standards. 2, record 4, English, - technology%2Dbased%20standard

1, record 4, French, - norme%20fond%C3%A9e%20sur%20la%20technologie

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used. 3, record 8, English, - shot
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 8, English, - shot

Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. 5, record 9, English, - stroke

"Blow" is not a standard term used in tennis circles. However it can be used to describe the hitting the ball with the tennis racket. Related terms : drive, shot. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. 2, record 15, English, - blow

Notes: 1. Sometimes transducers comprising a separate complete assembly are considered as a special group of measuring instruments. 2. Measuring instruments, measuring transducers and auxiliary measuring devices are sometimes grouped together under the heading "measuring equipment". 1, record 16, English, - measuring%20instruments

Translator's note to : measuring instruments(6. 1), material measure("passive" measuring instrument)(6. 1. 1) and measuring instrument("active")(6. 1. 2). The general classification of measuring instruments given in these 3 clauses is difficult to translate unambiguously since, although the French term(6. 1) "instrument de mesurage" corresponds exactly to the English term "measuring instrument", there is no English term corresponding to the French term "appareil mesureur"(6. 1. 2) which is apparently confined to instruments incorporating transducers. The term "material measure" is acceptable in English for 6. 1. 1, when there is particular need to avoid ambiguity in referring to a device of the "passive" type. The translation of 6. 1. 2 thus repeats the term "measuring instrument" but in this instance the word "active" has been added in brackets, for clarification. 1, record 16, English, - measuring%20instruments
